having owned a slew of old (5-7 year old) cameras from both kodak, and a new fuji.... i sold both on ebay to buy the new A510.
was this a mistake? read on. i have always liked canon as a company... having used their printers before and owning a canon film camera that worked great and still does.
all that in mind... i love my new A510. it's small, light, has a huge LCD, and has great battery life. let me break it down according to pros/cons:
PROS
small, lightweight
huge lcd
solid feel
manual controls + great built in modes for the novice
all the great things about the a75
CONS
must buy rechargeables (expected at this price)
too small a memory card (16mb is rediculous)
i will say that all the newer cameras with their eloborate auto focus systems seem to take an extra 1/2 second to take a picture.... but that occured in all but the most expensive models i tested. i was not used to this however, previously owning a kodak dc280... it was almost instantanious.
hope this helps.
feel free to ask any questions you may have..... i will do my best to answer them.
peace.

I have been looking at compact size digital cameras for well over a month, trying to find one that will fit my needs. I already have an Olympus C-4000Z which I love and it takes awsome photos!!! I have been looking for a small "stick it in your pocket" point and shoot to take with us on our trip to Disney in April. I love my Olympus but I want to be able to turn a knob for a setting, not have to worry about a lense cap etc.
Yesturday I discovered the A510!!! I thought I found the answers to what I was looking for. So I went to Staples to play with this camera (can't beat the price!!!) While playing with it I noticed it does have considerable shutter lag (not very fast) I did not like the fact that the screen goes black after you take the shot and then holds the photo for what seems forever and then the screen goes black again before it is ready to take another shot. I am really afraid I am going to miss a ton of photo shots. (I love how fast the Sony W-1 is but have heard to many negatives with blurry photos)
Is there anyway to speed up the A510? Does the screen going black bother you?
Really impressed with the new canons. From the pictures it seems like they have increased the zoom to four times while at the same time improved the sharpness noticeably. Cant find any PF as well. Hard to believe how they can do this while making the camera smaller. Think this is the camera I going to be recommending to my dad.
Anyone done a side by side size comparison between the A510/520 and A75/95?

there is a great setting called "HOLD" that fixes this issue.
by default, the camera shows the image for 3 secs then goes blank. with hold on, it keeps the image up until you shoot the next - which is kinda nice. the other HUGE benefit is that with hold on, you can simple delete the last image rather than having to go into playback mode, view, then decide... which saves a bunch of hassle.
this actually seemed to speed up things a bit. 2 other options to take faster pics are:
1. go in scene mode 'kids & dogs": this mode is meant for snapping pictures of things moving a little faster... helps a little.
2. disabling the artificial intelligence autofocus: this seems to reduce the number of 'zones' from 9 to 1.... but helps with lag as well
one of the things that just can't be avioded is flash recharge time.... that is dependant on capacitor sizing and hardware found in the camera... so if your using the flash... you have to wait X amount of seconds no matter what.
at first the autofocus delays really pissed me off... but i realize that most digital cameras do this and its just something to get used to. my old kodak dc280 was basic and i don't think it has autofocus to this extent. my solution so far has been to make sure that while i am framing shots, i have the shutter button pressed half way down so that the autofocusing is done. that way i can just push the button the rest of the way down and viola... faster shots...
hope this helps... i am not the most technical person... so forgive any bad teminology...
peace.

Hi,
Many people seem to have already gotten A510 !!
How are the nightshots with A510? I saw the pics from A75 (my friend's) had considerable noise in it. At ISO400 the noise was infact quite high... How is A510 doing in comparison?
Thanks,
Kaz

all P&S will show noise at high ISO speeds. What I suggest is to use a tripod and set for a longer shutter speed with the ISO at 50 or 100.

you are right...i should get a tripod too with my camera !! or else long shutter speed option will be useless
I bought a tripod within two days of buying my camera, and have already had so much fun experimenting with night shots, manual controls and different shutter speeds/apertures. Found one for $25 at Circuit City. Will probably buy a better one later, but for a "starter" tripod, it works great.

what make did you get? 25$ seems a good price...
is it sufficiently tall and light?
thanks

Is the A510 an advanced version of A95 series?

A510 is the advanced version of A75.

A510 is the advanced version of A75.
I read up a review of the A510 - it says you can use a Canon High Power Flash as an external flash. Can it take non-Canon flash units?

Kaz-
On trips I pack a Walmart tripod (about $18) right in the suitcase and it has always survived the bumping and bruising of airline travel for the past three years without mishap.
At $18 it is a good value.

careful with light tripod as wind may affect shooting stability which will result to camera 'shake'. :)
