this is my first camera, and probably the only camera that my parents are going to buy me, so i want one that will both last a while and allow for me to grow as as i learn to take cool looking photos, not just the family and friends shots. I really like the feel of the sd300, which was a surprise to me since i have pretty big hands. most other ultracompacts feel akward in my hands and i have to struggle just to feel comfortable holding it. Obviously i've not yet been able to hold a p200, but unless they change alot in the ergonomics from the p150, i don't think it will compare to the sd300. the problem with the sd300 is the lack of manual controls, which i fear would limit me to family and friends pictures. are there any photography enthusiast out there who own an sd300 that can share with me their experiences with the camera as far as taking photos (not just indoor shots of people, but outdoor stuff and cool looking pics), and similarly are there any sony owners (preferably of the p150 since its the closest relative of the 200) who can share the pros and cons of the limited but at least existant manual features on the camera.

I've been very happy with my SD300. I takes excellent photos of skiing and winter hiking scenery, which has been the major requirement for me. There are enough manual controls (ISO, many modes) that I've had no problem getting the shots I need. There's more flexibilty than you think.

But it is basically a P&S camera, no question about that. I think it works for me, but if you are looking in the Canon line for a camera with manual controls, consider the A95 or its soon to be replacement.

thanks man, i was actually thinking about the a95, but then i was over it after i went down to the shop and saw how bulky it really was. it also doesn't have teh same feel as the sd300. hopefully its replacement will be a bit better in that category.
