View Full Version : A Digital Camera I Can Stick In My Golf Bag

Although I'm not a great golfer, I am lucky enough to travel and play on some of the world’s greatest golf courses (Ireland, Scotland, etc.). My current digital camera - Nikon Coolpix 5700 with lens hood and polarizing filter is just too big to keep in my golf bag. When I get a good shot of a course I usually blown it up to 8 x10, 8 x 12, or occasionally a little larger.
Without a polarizing filter, I find that the pictures (sky, etc.) get washed out.
I'm no expert when it comes to digital photography. It seems like if I want to keep a polarizing filter option, I have to go with add-ons to the bigger digital cameras. I'm looking for something as easy to use as point and shoot, but will capture the true essence of the golf course. Can anyone recommend a digital camera that will be small enough to fit in my golf bag and give me the kind of golf course pictures I am looking for.
Appreciate the help.

I'm not sure what size the pocket is you'd be keeping the camera in, but maybe a Canon G6 would suit you. It has 7+MP so you could have huge printouts and it has gotten good reviews, especially concerning image quality. The only drawback is the optical zoom, unless you don't care about that.

The Canon G6 size seems about right. For a polarizing filter I'll have to add the lens adapter which will increase the overall footprint of the camera. Does anyone know if there are any "smaller" digital cameras (similar to the G6) that don't require a lense adapter to add a filter.

Agreed. The Canon G6 is a good fit for your needs.

Go with the Canon A510. The G6 is real nice, but a bit of overkill. The A510 has a 4X zoom, and is pocket sized (handy for those candid greens shots). 3.2 MP is plenty of resolution, and at $199 it's not a big deal if it gets beat up a little. ;)

Appreciate the feedback. I went to the store and held the G6 and it’s still a little big for my purposes. I also looked at the A95, the A510/520, and the S70. The S70 impressed me because it is very small, has a wider lense than the others, can add an adapter (quirky) and polarizing filter and has high mega pixels when needed. A small draw back is the zoom. So, it looks like I'm leaning towards the S70. Any horror stories with the S70?

So far the S70 seems to be clean on our E18 error survey. Some Canon zoom models seem to have a problem with this (mostly fatal) error).

Looking at the sample pictures on this website, to me, here are the cons:
- Corners are blurry (at wide-angle?).
- Barrel Distortion a bit more than what I would want. ( Buildings look like they're leaning down).
- I have heard about Purple Fringing problems but I haven't researched enough to actually see it.
If you want, you can checkout the sample pictures from this camera. Click on "Reviews" up top. Look for Canon S70 from the list. Once found, go to the page, scroll down and you will find a link for Sample Pictures.

Nope - S70 has been fine from what I've heard from my Canon buddies.

What about the Sony P series, like the Sony P93/P100/P150? They are small, have ok zoom, and you can add filters via an adapter.
