I currently use a Canon EOS 5 with 28-135 Zoom and 90mm macro lenses which gives very good results for my needs. I am looking to migrate to a digital SLR. I do a lot of macro work with jewelery and a bit a general purpose (i.e. a bit of everything that you can think of) photography. My investigations indicate that a Canon EOS 20D is the best camera to go for. I am very fussy about image quality and colour correctness and don't want to spend much time image correcting after shooting.

Is the Canon the right camera for me (lack of spot metering concerns me) or should I be considering a Olympus E1 or similar.

Honestly any dSLR requires post processing. Most canon dSLR's atleast require exposure and curves changes depending on how vibrant/look you want to your pictures.

I'd wait personally and see what the rebel XT offers. Jewlery photography doesn't need ISO 3200 or 5 FPS cont mode so the new rebel might be good for you depending what canon does with it (some rumor 8mp sensor, some rumor 6 with upgrades to known issues)

20D is a great camera though, ISO 100 on any canon dSLR sensor is silky smooth.

If your budget allows it, I would just jump for the 20D. It's truly a great camera, and you shouldn't have any buyer's remorse. Just remember as the person above said that many images will require a little touching up in Photoshop unless your technique is completely flawless.

I've heard the following about the Canon EOS 20D:
1) Flash pictures are very often underexposed and not consistent
2) Camera seems to lock up often (probably an early firmware bug that will be fixed)

If your primary goal is to use the lenses you already have, then the 20D is a viable solution, sans spot metering. If existing lens usage is not critical, and in addition to the E1, you might want to look at the Nikon D70, or the Pentax *ist DS.

If you are fussy, and don't want to spend $3000, then stick with film, and buy a Canon A510 for macro and jewelry shots. Actually there is also a good deal going on the Nikon CP5400 as well (around $225 after rebate).

Yes, although they do a great job, there are choices besides Canon.

That's been long fixed. Directly addressed on Canon's site. Yes you need to upgrade the firmware, but it's there.
