Hello -
I have a photo that I intend to sell locally. I intend to produce a large number (by my standards) of prints ... possibly 2000 or more. They will be 8x10's. I'd like to produce them on a thick paper stock. I also want to have some text appear on the back of the photo (describing the contents of the front).
What are the various technologies available for this purpose, and how does the image quality compare to that of a genuine photographic print? Also, what are the relative costs?
Any information or links to other helpful web sites is most appreciated.

Preston,
It sounds to me like you want to look at a 4-color printing press or Xerox Docucolor. I would call your local print houses to see what they offer. To do it with an inkjet or similar would be very expensive and very time consuming. For the quantities you want and the paper stock I think your local print house is the best bet.

A pal of mine just started a printing business and he got the Xerox Docucolor too. So it's definitely worth checking out.
I recently did a small run of calendars for family, friends and my girlfriend's family and friends. There were ten in all. I found the cheapest place for a small run was actually Staples. I had them all done on a colour copier and comb bound. They look pretty good. Obviously there's a little loss of quality with a colour copier but none that's really noticable - the recipients won't know the difference anyway.
Might I suggest purchasing a colour photocopier or a colour laser printer? They're designed for mass printing.

Funny, I work for Xerox and work on the color boxes. I used to print with an Epson 820, and the Epson blew the prints from the Xerox away. Even the new flagship, iGen3, can't match the quality from an inkjet. But, the guys I work with love the prints. Only when I show an identical print from the Epson do they notice anything. So I may be just too picky. I have places doing millions of color prints a month, so people do like the quality.
BTW, used to print with an Epson because the ink clogged again for the last time. Moving to a Canon ip6000D. Hope I am happy with it.

Hey incidentally how is the print quality from the Canon ip6000D? I own the Canon iP4000 currently and may upgrade soon.

Just got the ip6000D yesterday. Only printed 1 photo on the supplied paper they give. I liked it, wife loved it, so it is a keeper. 2 paper trays, auto duplexing, they work well.

pdurrer,
I think instead of buying a printer, you can try to have it developed.
Visit our website and you will find we offer quality photos at low prices:-)
The unit price for printing one 8*10 is 2USD. If you ask a big quantity, surely we can offer discount.
