What I want in a digital camera is a good movie mode so I won't have to tote a camera and camcorder whenever we go out on trips (not to mention switching between the two in the middle of an event). I understand the clip-length limitations of the Canon Powershot S1 IS and they're acceptable to me. I prefer to keep my clips short and combine them in post-editing. I also like this cameras ability to use the zoom in movie mode.

With regards to these features, is the Powershot the best that we'll be seeing for 2005 or are there other digital cameras out there (or due out by Fall 2005) that I should be considering? The DCResource review didn't mention any alternatives as I recall. It only recommended alternate super-zoom cameras.

Or maybe I should be approaching this from the other end of the spectrum. Should I instead be looking for a digital camcorder with a good (3.2-4MP) camera mode?

Me again.
If your looking for the best DVD-recorder right now, its the LG GSA 4163B drive. Available for $67 (with s&H), it records DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-RAM, All cd types, book type setting, oh god and a lot of other features!. Best PC motherboard is Asus P5ad2-e Premium edition (not deluxe). Processor sweet spot is the Intel Pentium 630 (3.0 GHz). This is pretty much digital heaven :o if you can afford it.

Btw, DiMAGE A200 has night mode, no redeye, great ISO200, 400 pics, RAW image file format, pretty fast shot to shot.
