Nikon D70 - forcing the speedlight flash

I have a Nikon D70, and often use it in complete darkness, taking shots in an underground mine. The in-built flash often won't work (because the distance to subject, etc, is too great to give an optimal result, presumably). Can I over-ride it, to 'make' it flash and take the picture I want? How do I do this?

I really don't understand what you mean when you say it won't work.

If you're taking shots in darkness than switch the camera to AUTO and the flash should fire. It should fire in P mode too if you manually raise it.
