View Full Version : Anything "New" catch anyone's eye?
I'm talking about the whole PMA thing and some of the more boring releases...
For me, the last couple of things that caught my eye are :
1) http://www.pdngearguide.com/gearguide/photos/stylus/127053-Sony-500mm-m.jpg
a Sony 500mm f4, look at all those switches!, it almost looks like a gun out of Halo.
2) http://www.pdngearguide.com/gearguide/photos/stylus/127033-Sigma_85_14_EX_DG_HSM_l.jpg
a Sigma 85mm 1.4, they say it will mount FF as well, depending on the price and the quality this would be a very good alternative to the Canon 1.8.
Then theres the more high-end news, like canon's new line of printers, if i was making more money off the photos i'd definitely give a 24" a try, and the iPF6300, looks like as good as any place to start.
Both Leaf, and Hasselblad working on 40mpx backs/systems, which would drop the price of all MF yet again.
What has caught your eye recently ?

I like the idea of the 85 1.4. Should be a good compromise between the 85L and the 85 1.8.
Printers don't interest me. You have to do a shed load of volume to justify the costs, and I really don't want to do THAT much printing myself because it would be a full time job. I'd rather let my lab drop-ship. They even have nice little gift boxes tied with ribbon.
I noticed the 85 1.4 is only DG HSM, not APO... Not sure how good the AF will be, and at 1.4 on FF, its pretty critical. I'd still get it if its priced well, maybe a bit cheaper then the 50 1.4 from canon?
Hehehe, i probably spend more on ink/paper then on lenses.
The plus side is i get the prints the exact way i want them, have a well decorated place, and theres something about bringing my pictures to life that makes me love printing.
I had some bad experiences with print shops around here, so the $ is well justified considering the hassles.
But i admit, even i wouldn't print 24x too often... I"m doing alot of 13x17s now, because i managed to find some cheap frames for em.

It'll probably be priced about the same as their 50, whatever that is. I don't pay attention anymore.
Yeah I don't like to print. I find it annoying. My labs get my images looking right, or close enough that it doesn't really matter, so I let them do the dirty work. They also offer a helluva lot more items than I could even consider getting into, and I really don't like stockpiling supplies. My R2400 pretty much only does catalogs anymore.

Too bad the 85mm doesn't have OS.

This caught my eye and is new to me, but not from PMA :)
In keeping with the forum being for digital cameras....
"Portrait" taken with a Canon 50D, 28-135mm IS lens, and a single 580EXII bounced.
Oh ! Nice !
I've been looking at some of those for a while ! I'm not too keen with my C33 at the moment.
Are you gonna get a metered prism for it ? I found using a separate lightmeter to be a pain and the waistlevel finder useless out of a studio.
I also strongly suggest a lens hood :P
You planning on scanning your own negatives ?

No. I've got a handheld meter that does reflected as well as incident. I like the incident measurements in some cases. Also picked up a spotmeter from KEH a while ago that I've got to learn to use more. I did buy a bargain graded non-metered 45 deg prism from KEH for an unbelievable $19. The waist level finder is actually not bad. It had an Acute Matte D focus screen which gives a nice bright image.

Picked one up from ebay. Also from ebay got an adapter so I could mount a bunch of my 67mm filters to the Bay 60 mount on the lens.

Yeah, I scanned some old MF negs from a Yashica D I have and that was kind of what pushed me towards the Hassy.
If you are considering a Hassy in the future, make sure you do some research on the serial number system for determining age and that some older lenses parts are no longer easy to get if it needs a fix. This 501C I have is a 1996 vintage and came with the box and all the original paperwork, matched insert for the film back, and is as close to mint as it can get. The ebay seller I got it from seems to have similiar kits every once in a while as well as other Hasselblad gear.
Don't know if it's OK to post a link to an ebay seller, but here goes...

Hmmm hasselblads....
With all the hassles i have getting negatives, then scanning, and editing them.
(I've received negatives, stapled, obvious finger prints, even a dark spot on one of them.)
Its not worth it for me to invest that much in a hasselblad, short of setting up a darkroom, but that model sure is sexy looking. Not sure why they went more mainstream on their HD cams.
What do you use to scan your negatives ? I'm using a 8800F and I'm having a hell of hard time with focus issues on it.

I've got an older Canon 9950F http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=120&modelid=10446
Haven't had problems with out of focus scans, but I'm re-learning how to make sure the negs are dust free before they get scanned.
Below is a shot with the Yashica D (6x6) taken back in the late 60's that was scanned on the 9950F.
