Linux users note that you can safely use the Windows version of the firmware installers: The .exe file is just a self-extracting archive. Use "wine" to execute the .exe, then copy the resulting .bin file to the CF card's root directory and start the firmware update process in the camera.

The official change log from Nikon might be a bit hard to read for the average user, but this change is actually a great improvement:
"When ISO sensitivity settings>ISO sensitivity auto control in the shooting menu is set to On, the Maximum sensitivity option can now be specified in steps of 1/3 EV, 1/2 EV or 1 EV, according to the Custom Setting b1 ISO sensitivity step value setting."
In plain words, it means that you can now let auto-ISO go up to 4000, not just 3200 or 6400. Since ISO 4000 is as high as I typically want the camera to go, I now no longer have to switch to manual ISO and select ISO 4000 manually when ISO 3200 just doesn't cut it any more. This, of course, also saves me the trouble of having to manually switch back to auto-ISO which I sometimes forget.
Thank you, Nikon! That's the one change I have been waiting for with my D700's firmware!

The firmware update instructions say you are to reformat the memory card afterwards. Of course this is just a very simplistic way of removing the .bin file from the card's root directory; you can of course also simply delete it manually and keep everything else on the card.

Those D300 updates look pretty nice too.
Edit: Whoops, that's the same update as there was a long time ago. Already running v1.10.
WTF is Manama and why do they get their own time zone added?

Frig I wish they do something similar for the 7D. With max Auto ISO upper limit. As well as minimum SS limit like on the Nikons.
I even emailed Canon about it when I first got the camera and they brushed me off.

I was just thinking the 7D needs a more customizable Auto ISO too.
Elisha, the next best thing would be manual mode, set your aperture and shutter, auto ISO, something we couldn't do on a Sony :D.

*kicks back in chair* Ahhhhh life is good! :p:D
Well I have just upgraded the D300 and it's still a D300. Very disappointing I must say, I was kinda hoping it would upgrade to a FF body. :o

But what if I update my D50 with the D700 firmwhere, do I get a D700 then?
I just figured out why there is no apparent changes on my camera.
The D300 IS NOT included in this update. The files linked to in the original post are dated October 2008!

Thats interesting. My older Canon P&S has two auto ISOs: Auto ISO, which maxes out at around 800 or something like that, and Auto High ISO, which will allow the camera to go right to maximum ISO, if it needs.

Yep. I edited my original post to say the "update" was the same as before. From what others have gathered, they [Nikon] wanted to put that one up there as well and put a huge warning tag on it saying "THIS IS NOT FOR THE D300s!"
The only thing I wish they updated on the D300 that they did with the "s" is the stupid battery indicator when using the battery grip. I still get stupid readings with it even when I install fully charged batteries in it. Sometimes its full, sometimes its half, and sometimes its flashing. I know there's full power, so Im not worried. Its just annoying.

Might be a silly shot in the dark but do you check to make sure the grip is tight and not loose? I get this same problem with the D200 and grip and its always a result of the grip coming slightly loose.

I can't turn that wheel any tighter. Its on there solid. Its just a silly thing that they got corrected on the 's' and didn't care to fix it with the regular D300.

is there a way of updating this without a memory card reader???
I usually download photos from the camera by connecting it to my laptop (my memory card reader on the laptop does not support CF)
i dont see why you cant just copy and paste from your PC direct to your CF card. it should come up as a drive right ?

yes it does come up as a drive but it wont let me copy anything across to it....like its protected or something?!
A card reader costs about $10 why not just buy one.
