I don't think my cheapy tripod is meant to hold my 50D....It worked but the photos didn't seem crisp. I think it may have shifted just a tad when it took the picture. I was using the timer for our Christmas picture.
I had a great heavy weight tripod, SIK I think was the brand but a piece is cracked and missing....dug it out of the deep dark closet....
I don't want to spend a ton on it. I basically use the tri pod 2 times a year...for our CHristmas family picture for cards and then the entire extended family....any suggestions?

For use twice a year, can't you just rest it on a table or something equally free? :)

Nope cause we do our annual Family Christmas picture outside.
And on Christmas day we have about 25 people in the picture so I don't have something that can hold it.
I do think if I had one I might play with it. Would be fun to do Christmas lights and things...

You had mentioned having a SLIK tripod that had something broken. If it's the head that's broken, is it made so it can unscrew from the legs? Just replace the head if that's the case. Which model SLIK is it?
SLIK head from Adorama....

These guys used to be recommended for their tripods......

A search on your local Craigslist might turn up something also.
