Budget

$200 or less

Size

Compact or ultra-compact

Features

10-12 megapixels

Standard zoom

Image quality - 7 or 8

No manual controls needed

General Usage

Camera will be used mostly for pictures of people, maybe some landscapes

Probably won't be making big prints

More indoor photos than low light

No sports/action photos

Miscellaneous

Would prefer Canon unless there is something markedly better

Right now I have been looking at the SD780 and SD1200

Image stabilization is the only "must have" feature

She has held the SD780 and said it felt reasonably comfortable. Previously she had the Sony Cybershot DSC-P8 and thought it was heavy and slow. If there's something better than the Canon cameras, I'd look into that too, but cameras that take SD cards are preferred. Thanks in advance for the help!

Welcome to the Forum. Thanks for dropping by.

In the canon line the SD-780 and SD-1200 are good choices. However, some older folks feel the the SD cameras are a bit hard to handle and hold. Another Canon possibility would be the A-1100.

Outside of Canon there is the Sony H-20 which is one of the best cameras when used in the fully automatic mode, it also has a really excellent built-in flash unit and offers 10X of optical zoom. It is slightly larger than the SD-series cameras.

Two other possibilities are the Kodak Z-915 and Z-950 which also offer 10X optical zoom in a thin compact case. They are very easy to use and offer automation that has been even improved giving face recognition, automatic scene mode recognition, and smart capture, that might appeal to your Mom.

Have a great day.
