I've decided an upgrade from my XTi to a 50d is probably my best option for the $ right now.

BUT i would probably need to sell my XTi to comfortably buy the 50d.

how much do you think i can sell an XTi with a BG-E3 battery grip for on craigslist?

You may get more if you sold them separately.

If you don't mind a refurbished 50D, you can trade in your XTi and get the 50D for $629

Makes sense getting a refurbished one since they seem to be going used for around 700-800 anyway for good condition ones.

I recieved the 50D and the 28-135 lens late last week. Total with tax and shipping, $816.44. The camera and lens essentially look like new. I did check the shutter count on the camera and it showed up as about 2500, so the camera evidently saw some use somewhere, but not even a used 50D that had no warranty could be bought for $629. Adorama's refurb 50D's are around $900 and the 300D body I traded in for it certainly couldn't make up a $300 difference if I tried to sell it. I suspect the key to trading up is if the camera is owned by the original owner, as Canon seemed to check my registration records when I talked to them. I kept all the accessories, books, CD's, and the kit lens from the 300D, so just a bare body is going back. They do ask what has failed and I said the shutter button was getting funky, even though the camera still functions perfectly. Kind of a shame that they might trash a working camera.

The government thought they had an original idea when they had the "Cash for Clunkers" program. They simply copied Canon's "Canon's for Clunkers" program.

Thats a really good deal! I just recently bought a 40D (9k shutter clicks) with a BGN2 for $730 off of ebay, which seemed to be a great deal from what I saw the other 40Ds and grips going for.

I would definitely sell the grip separately because you will get more for each one. At least that was my general impression looking on ebay for a month or so with the 40D.

I would ask, will this be unconfortable or painful? If you can live with a little discomfort. keep the XTi. I made the same upgrade, XTi to 50D. I still have and use both. I keep a different lens on each.

I believe this is a "factory refurbished" 50D from Canon. So it should come with a warranty and it would look like brand new. Mark, can you confirm this?

I have bought refurbished products like my Magellan 4250 GPS and Dell Mini 10v. The Magellan came with a 6 mos warranty, but since I'm a AAA member, I got a free 2 year extended warranty on it. Both works perfectly, and looked brand new.

I believe a lot of people on this forum have had good experiences from refurbished camera equipment like bodies and lenses also.

I've bought Canon refurb lenses through Adorama and they've looked like new and worked flawlessy, so I had a good amount of confidence buying a refurbed camera. The 50D was refurbed by Canon and came with a 90 day warranty through them.
