I havent really thought that much about it before, but now with better glass and camera, I wonder if it makes a huge difference what filter I buy.

Was going to get a straight up Hoya Circular polarisor from amazon:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hoya-77mm-Circular-Polarising-Filter/dp/B00007FX5F/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1257150116&sr=8-1

But then there is the other type:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hoya-77mm-Digital-Circular-Filter/dp/B000KKVFD6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1257150116&sr=8-3

Differences? And would I notice a difference with the cheaper one.

yes I know I have spent a lot on the lens/camera, so why not treat them to a nice filter, but the difference is quite a lot, so wondering if its that big a deal.

thanks

Phil

d700+24mm = slim CPL
hoya pro or B+W.

Pretty succinct and effective :)

So its the more expensive glass then I guess!

What about the onboard vignetting control the D700 has? that must compensate a bit?

It can compensate for lens vignetting like shooting wide open, but doesn't work when you can see hard black edges from a filter in the corners. From what I've read the marumi thin CPL, kenko and B+W are good ones.

I use the Hoya S-HMC Pro 1 Circular Polarizer on my 12-24 and my 70-200. I think it works great. Pricey little devil, but the results are fantastic.

If you are planning on buying a Hoya, check out this guy on Ebay:

http://stores.ebay.com/Spotlight-Photo

Prices that match the Hong Kong stuff, but you are buying from someone in the US. I cant remember if you are in the US or not, but that may or may not be important to you. Also, his shipping is pretty quick. I think I have received stuff 3 days after payment.

Edit: Whoops, I saw you were looking to buy from Amazon UK ,so I might suspect buying from the US isn't high on your priority list.

Edit #2: Added a few photos with the Hoya polarizer

I use the Sigma 77 wide polarizer (bought it because it was the only 77 mm slim line polarizer my photo shop had in store when I bought the camera), and I am absolutely happy with it. It works fine even on the 18-35 f/3.5-4.5 (FX!) without and dark corners.

...and, what's equally important, you can still stick the lens cap on with the polarizer in place. I have a 62 mm polarizer that cannot do that, and that one drove me absolutely nuts: Unscrew the polarizer or put the camera into the bag without a lens cap. Eek.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I think I will opt for a hoya pro lens. I can pick that up for around £75 with delivery. Will keep looking on ebay but will only buy new (probably be scratched otherwise).

Thanks again.

I guess I never considered the 24mm as proper wide angle...
