To all those lucky people with a 7D, get yourself the new lightroom 3 beta!!!
Shoot in raw, use the new noise reduction. It's really wowed me.
In fact, I might go buy a 7D at the weekend.
Here's a before after shot in raw @ iso 12800 (sample files were downloads). and this is with the luma noise reduction unavailable yet!

hey, you spoiled my otherwise nice weekend plan. after reading you I might drop all plans and rush to the shop for buying 7D, but before I do this I need to know your telephone number which I can hand to my wife to address her complaints. :p
seriously, this 7D is very tempting, someone call in Santa please I have ONE wish for him :D

dammit, now i'm excited about the new lightroom. it never ends.
well, i'm supposed to be installing windows 7, i guess i'll install it when i get windows 7 going. do you know if it will install side by side with lightroom 2? ..or does it upgrade lightroom 2?

It installs side by side adam, and saves 2 catalogues.
So far i'm really impressed with LR3, it'll be a no brainer upgrade for me when it's out.
The new vignette tool, film grain, Noise reduction are all great, and the sharpening seems to be better to my eyes too.
Go download the beta and get some high ISO 7D raw files to play with, it really took me back.
I'm a huge hater of chroma noise and LR3 gives me a nice LUMA noise, that I actually quite like. I can't wait for them to hook up the LUMA noise filter as well.
The 6400 and 3200 ISO's were even better!

Again, these are 100% crops.
This time at ISO 3200.

I'm really surprised with how much detail it can bring back. Look at the bristles on the right brush.
Maybe it's just me. But the one thing holding me back on the 7D was I was a little disappointed with the clarity of the images, and the noise. This has completely swayed me:D

that's all you had to say, i'm downloading as we speak. for some reason microsoft hasn't sent us our download email like they're supposed to..so this will at least keep me from getting too frustrated for now.

i'm watching the videos, this looks like it's gonna save even more time. i like the new import process and custom presets!

unrelated to noise reduction, but i just put the beta through hell on these two photos. my first impressions, they sped up the spot removal tool by a lot. there used to be a noticeable lag when using it, but now it works pretty seamless. zooming in and moving around has slowed down though. it did crash on me once in the middle of the second picture, which is normal when add as many graduated filter adjustments as i did in this one, probably around 8. i rebooted lightroom and my changes were saved, all except the one that crashed it. i noticed they added some cool presets for the selective brush which is nice. they added an "iris enhancement" which coincidentally i had already made for myself the last time, which leads me to believe they're spying on me.
anyway, looking forward to trying it out more, so far so good. performance seems good.

Looks good Adam. If I don't pick up a 7D at the weekend, I might take the 40D through its paces at higher ISO's and see what LR3 makes of it.

Well, maybe I was a bit excited, but this kind of noise reduction for RAW files in lightroom is a big plus.
It's not even finished yet. Like I said, you can only use chroma noise reduction at the mo. I think the final product will be great.
Personal preference though, it impressed me. (and that's what counts for me:D)

well sure, but I thought the NR was pretty darn good in LR2 as well.

add a patch tool and liquify tool and i think i'll never use photoshop again.

I was most happy about the grain addition - I thought numerous times that would be good to have in LR.
I like LR2, but lately i've only been in photoshop, something about layers and using my wacom along with action scripts for things like file info editing +copyrighting on the fly, is just too good to pass up.
Plus LR2 is hell slow for me:( Hope lr3 is better, but im planning a major pc upgrade soon anyways, Out goes the P4.

LR3 is noticeably faster starting up than LR2. But then again, I still haven't loaded up a large Gallery yet. I'll do more testing at home. :)

it sure does. funny i came here to correct myself. i just got done installing windows 7 x64 and lightroom... and sure enough when i installed it, it said something like installing 64-bit lightroom. before i was on vista business 32-bit and since the package picked automatically i had no idea.
anyway, as long as he moves to a x64 processor and x64 windows he should see a huge difference.....er, um, or mac. those new 27" iMacs are soooo tempting. IPS panel monitor too! i have a client that works on a 24" iMac and it's ridiculous how much better my pictures look on that monitor compared to my laptop monitor. either way i plan to upgrade my monitor soon. NEC has a new 23" IPS panel monitor for around $400, i'll probably get that.

yeah it surprised me too - I'm on Vista 64 on a Core i7 975 - I'm hoping Windows 7 64 will be faster, because I wasn't like blown away by the speed on Vista....

That monitor looks good Adam. Cheap too. I bought the Dell 2209WA E-IPS and it by far made the biggest improvement on the way I saw the images I captured and post-processed.
I had to re-process all my old images again.

Check out the Photoshop CS5 here (http://cs5.org/)! Dang!
I'm so happy I didn't pull the trigger on upgrading to CS4 and Lightroom 2, as I was seriously considering! According to their marketing literature (that I can find) I would have been stuck with another upgrade almost right away!
This way; I can just download the betas and probably won't even expire before the release (hopefully).
EDIT: Oops, my bad. No CS5 beta yet. Maybe Q1 or Q2 2010 (saw references to both), but this site does give a glimmer of what they're adding.
It's very glitzy stuff, but for meat and potatoes photo cleanup I haven't seen a whole lot. This is for the hard core photo modification and manipulation application (ie: fun but not so useful to average photography).
That patchmatch video was amazing, i never expect it to work quite that well in real-life but if its even 1/2 as good, its still quite good.
f8, 1/1600s ? wow thats what i call LOW light. how could he even see what he was trying to focus on ? wow man...incredible ! i need one of those cameras !!!!

I never said it was a good low light test.
I was just posting about the new Noise Reduction in Lightroom3, and I was quite impressed with how it is managing the noise.

I want to change the title of the thread to just "Lightroom3 + Noise Reduction" but got a feeling it'll be a while till someone can get round to it.
Anywhooo,
Here's a quick LR2 v LR3 Noise Reduction comparison. Both with default LR settings of 25 in the noise. 100% crops.
