Hy all, just planning a trip next month so i decided to replace my old camera with some new model.

I searched a lot and basically decided that i ll go with canon or olympus. I am far from being a pro so i am loking for a decent point and shoot camera.

Those who catch my eye were:

- Canon Digital IXUS 870 IS
- Olympus mju 9000

The things i am looking for are: small pocket camera, image stabilization, decent flash, great automatic mode, and maybe the most of it ... good result while making indoor or night pictures.

Both cameras are very similiar to me by the specs but still need some experts view so i can finally decide what to buy. Zoom & megapixels just standard, nothing more that i need.

Not interested in macro shooting or printing large size pics. Please consider only those 2 i mention earlier.

Thanks a lot :)

Almost an apples vs oranges matchup. As Canon has a reputation for quality hardware and decent optics, the "safe" choice if you like. This particular Olympus has a lot more zoom, so would normally be compared to the expensive Canon SX200 IS. While I'm not thrilled with handling the Mju 9000, review sample shots do show nice color. So taken as a whole, they are both desirable, for different reasons. I'm not clear on your "night pictures" requirement. If this means available light (no flash), neither of these cameras is outstanding. While the Mju 9000 is an interesting choice, if you do try that one, I would suggest using a store with a good return policy. Just in case.

Hy Kelly, first of all thanks for the response. I am quite newbie in photography but i knew about olympus advantage over canon in zoom but it doesnt matter much to me. Thought about night shooting, low light scene without flash or indoor like parties etc. Imaqe qualitty from both cameras are pretty good for the price, dunno... maybe i am wrong :)

With either, you'll be wanting flash indoors or in low light, especially if people are moving...

I agree with Paradox, flash is much better for nighttime parties. But that will limit the subject distance, you cannot expect to fill a room with flash. Flash results with these two cameras are roughly on par with each other.

Without flash can be a difficult equation. This can mean a very high ISO, where the Olympus cameras struggle. If there is enough room light to keep the ISO reasonable (or you're using a tripod), then the Olympus should be alright. In my view Fujifilm F-series, Nikon, and Sony work out better as party cams.

Have there been any reviews of first the Canon S90 and second, the Canon G11? May want to consider the S90 if I am what I am reading about it's low light improvements over previous Canon point-and-shoots are true.
