Went to one of (if not THE) biggest camera stores in oslo, and lost my mind. Well, I'd already lost my mind before I went there because for some strange reason I had to have a 500mm lens. It just grew on me this week, the sensation that my life would not be complete without it.

And seeing as my job doesn't pay that much, I could only afford a sigma 150-500mm and a sigma x2 teleconverter. And in no way shape or form am I trying to imply that it's a cheap lens. But compared to other lenses with a 500mm reach it's a steal ;) And when I write "just bought", I mean JUST bought. I came home, ran up the nearest hill, slapped everything on my D300 and took a series of test shots that in no way reflect the potential of the lens (but does a great job of showing how crap things can be when you don't pay any attention to anything and just do things as fast as you can)

And before you ask "what are you going to photograph with it?", let me assure you that I havn't got a clue. No idea, at all. It's a part of my "buy something and put it to good use" challenge. It's fun just to loose your mind sometimes.. Very expencive, but fun :p

As I said, these are just some test shots, poorly put together and shot in a hurry because I was really looking forward to seeing the reach of this lens, so - yes - they're crap. The editing is crap aswell, so don't complain about the variation in color etc on the pictures because I threw these together from RAW files in a hurry. This is just to show the reach of this lens.

(I forgot to manually focus this shot, so it's a bit iffy...)

I was a bit dissapointed by the results with the teleconverter, as I imagined 1000mm would give me a lot more reach compared to the 500mm shot. But other then that, I'm looking forward to testing this lens out more seriously.

And the OS (vibration reduction) on this lens is loud, and it sounds horrible. It's like some small mechanical animal is dying inside of it. But it works.

Congrats.

Mate of mine has one on his fairy camera so by definition it doesn't take very good photos. I'm sure that yours will be far better. :D

I have a story about this particular mate.

He is a volunteer fireman and spent days fighting our bush fires earlier this year (173 people killed, over 2000 houses destroyed in 24 hours). As a thank you the organisers of the Melbourne F1 GP offered free entry to all volunteer fire fighters. Phil turned up with his Canon and his then brand new 150-500 after driving 200 km to get there and they would not let him in because of the "pro" lens. Go figure!

Thanks, both of you. I think it's going to be fun figuring out what I'm going to do with this lens :) For now, some shots of the gear itself...

That's the nikkor 35mm f1.8 lying next to the sigma 150-500. There's just a hint more glass in the 150-500 :D

Hahah that should be fun.
I'd love to own one but I don't I have the time to enjoy it. Plus... I won't be able to justify buying it at this stage.
Now you can be a paparazzi. :)

Wow I didn't realize 500mm (and x2) zoomed so much, thanks for the demonstration!

Excellent pictures of the lens too!

Congrats on the frivolous consumption. Glad I'm not the only one who buys gear for fun.

Great demonstration shots.

Thanks for the feedback. Went out last night and this morning just shooting random stuff. I had planned to spend hours out shooting this morning, but had to cut it short because taco's and vodka last night + a red bull for breakfast = not such a good idea :)

Anyway, some samples:

All the shots are handheld? Or did you use a tripod? That's interesting.
As you said the OS function is loud... but if it works who cares? At this focal range the subjects will not hear it.

Dude Kiwi, that's so screwed! wtf! Man I would have had to have told them to let me talk to someone who had some sense.

Which gears would they consider non-pro? Will a Nikon D#0 and standard 70-300 be also considered pro gear? Does anyone know?

Photowerkz: you sound very guarded originally with such comment as what will you shoot with such lens? I bet most of us got into photography because of the creativity and fun it offers; so if you can afford a fun lens, why not?
It will be good to have this lens for a day at a safari... if not, the local zoo will do.

I think there is something on the ticket or in the entry rules about pro glass. Pro glass being defined as long focal length. I had no problems with a 300mm lens that last time I went and I have never had a problem at the Moto GP with a 200 or 300mm lens.
I know that there are issues with the Tennis as well. When the guys took one of our customers earlier in the year he took a 200 f2.8 lens and a 1.7x teleconverter and had no problems because the security people had no idea what the teleconverter was.
The stupid thing is that they don't blink at people walking in with 18x or 20x lenses on P&S cameras but I guess that the results from them are less likely to be sold which is where the real issue is.

How about some EXIF data on those last 3 shots :D. They r awesome. Love the smoothness of that first shot.

Have to make this quick as I'm off to work right now:

The one of the tower at night is f9,5 - 30 seconds exposure - iso 200
The 112 sign is f9,5 - 1 second exposure - iso 200
The last one is f6,3 - 1/6000 sec exposure - iso 200
