HI guys,
I know this is Nikon dslr thread but you guys are awesome and would really like your suggestion. Mods can delete this post if inappropriate.
Let me give you guys a little background. I have a canon SD630 P&S and this summer, I used my brother in laws Canon S5 IS and was having fun while using it for my nephews birthday. I decided that I needed a new camera and so I got a Dslr canon XSI with the Kit lens. Now almost two months later I feel its too big to carry around and too many settings.
I am not having fun, plus lack of zoom, I know I can get a lens but I don't want to keep changing lens. I am more of a snapshooter. So I planning to return my camera. Isn't the whole idea to taking pictures is to have fun, and I am not having fun with this camera. Also I wear glasses and using the viewfinder with my glasses on is really annoying to me.
What do you guys think?

1. Why is this totally Canon post on the Nikon DSLR forum?
2. OK, it's not really about Canon, but why on a Nikon specific forum?
3. Are you getting the point...yet?
Try the General Digital Photography or DSLR (non-brand specific) forums.

I am not sure exactly what you are asking?
Do you want a zoom equivalent to the S5 IS without changing lenses? About the only lenses that can come close to that are the Tamron 18-250 and 18-270 that I am aware of. The quality of those lenses may or may not be what you are looking for, though.
Do you want fewer setting? I think that the XSI can be used in fully auto mode.
Do you want something smaller? I think that the XSI is one of the smallest dSLRs.
Do you want a non-dSLR. Looks like it.
Do I think that a dSLR is too bulky to carry around and change lenses? No.
Ray.

How are you planning on returning a 2 month old used camera?
HI guys,
Let me give you guys a little background. I have a canon
Thats your problem right there!!:D
Seriously though, it sounds like you just want a P&S, you said in your own words youre more of a point and shooter. If you dont like the settings of DSLRs, that wont ever change. If you dont wnat to be changing lenses, that really cant be avoided unless you buy an all in one compromise lens, where quality will be lost.
Whatever you do decide, before you purchase it, try holding it first to see how it feels so you dont repeat the problem of it being to heavy for you.

Buying a kit that came with a prime instead of a zoom lens is the real problem if you didn't want to change lenses.
I think now you've become down on the SLR, even if you fixed that problem you'd still not be happy with it.

I think he probably meant "lack of telephoto", not "lack of zoom"
We all make mistakes in life but what most normal adult people do is just get on with things and rectify the mistake they don't whine and moan and expect somebody to wrap an arm around their shoulders and tell them everything will be better in the morning.
Accept that you have made a mistake and take what actions are available to you to rectify it.

No, I think he means zoom. He says it annoys him to have to change lenses. If he only needed telephoto, he wouldn't have to change lenses. He wants wide angle along with telephoto, thus the need to change lenses, unless he buys an all in one zoom lens.

no dilemma. get rid of the dslr and buy a superzoom. :)

From a purely range/compact standpoint, there's nothing that can compete with a superzoom. It's just all the other issues you have to worry about and trade off on.

Uhm, don't think so. The kit lens is a zoom lens, but when he said he lacked zoom, DPR assumed he bought a prime. I didn't say anything about this guys needs.

Actually, what I should have said was that the OP meant lack of "more" zoom. I assume that the OP bought an XSI with a kit lens(~18-55 equivalent to about 3x zoom) when he is used to the zoom of an S5 IS with a ~12x zoom. To get close to this type of zoom without changing lenses, he would have to get at least an 18-200 lens.
I personally think that he should go back to an all-in-one superzoom since that is what he seems to want.

lol, that's not really the point. The point is I was telling DPR that he didn't get a prime. In the guys statement it doesn't matter much whether or not he meant zoom or telephoto.

Sorry to have misunderstood your point, but you did say that he meant "lack of telephoto", which does not necessarily sound like you were saying he didn't get a prime. But it turns out that this is what you meant.
What my point is, is that the OP wants an SLR with a similar zoom range as an S5 IS(~12x zoom/36-432mm focal range) without changing lenses. He is not going to get that without seriously compromising lens quality.
Ray.

No worries. I didn't say it because I quoted DPRs post. Sorry for the confusion.

I love this thread - Now if we can wedge the canon vs nikon, pc vs mac in here, it would implode upon itself.

Yeah it was a bit slow to totally disrupt this thread. We will have to try harder next time.

as long as the OP gets the advice he/she needs (deserves), that's all that matters.

Just make sure you take photos of it, because it'll probably go down the path of the previous Zune and be something which is sighted as frequently as the Loch Ness.. :p

Hey, I know people with Zunes. And it's actually doing really well, because it's a rather wicked sick piece of gadgetry.
