Im in the US now, and stocking up on alot of the things that seem to gain a +50% price increase when they appear in New Zealand. I was thinking of getting the Nikon 2.8 105mm while I was here, but no urgent need, I could get it the next time I am here as well. I know that Nikon doesnt announce its development plans very well, but in your guys opinion is that a lens that is likely to be improved or upgraded with a new version in the next year to two? I can wait if something is coming down the road.

if yoiur talking abut the 105/2.8 VR macro lens then the answer is no, there is not likely to be an upgrade for quite some time. its a pretty new lens and is superb.

If you can get it at a price that means you can subsequently resell it in NZ for what you paid or even a small profit why would you not buy one now regardless of whether a new model might be in the wings.

Assuming you mean the AF-S 105mm f/2.8 VR Micro I'd suggest probably not... it was a new design in 2006... plenty of other lenses long overdue for a refresh before they get back to this one, I would think.

A new version in the next year to two? That would be long wait.

And what would you anticipate would be "improved" on the AF-S 105mm f/2.8 VR Micro? It is a superb lens with argueably "standard setter" status within it's category.

I's not like the 300 f4 that would benefit with the addition of VR, and perhaps a more rugged tripod mount. Now there's a lens begging to be upgraded before the 105 despite both having great optics.

the only thing they could really fix with the 105 is giving it a tripod collar.

What about halving the price? :D

I think the only other Nikon Macro that would be a candidate for a refresh anytime soon is the 200mm f/4.

I think the only other Nikon Macro that would be a candidate for a refresh anytime soon is the 200mm f/4.

This glass is so amazingly sharp optically (it easily rivals my 200 f/2 and 400 f/2.8) that I really can't say I feel it is lacking in any substantial way nor do I know anyone else who shoots with it that feels it is in need of a refresh.

This isn't to say that any lens can't be improved, etc. but if you've got this lens wishing for an update is really the last thing on your mind. Personally I'd much rather see the 24-70 upgraded than this lens.

it needs afs and VR

it needs afs and VR

Neither of these would improve its use as a macro lens but if one were to want to use it as a general purpose telephoto then sure I would agree.

cant agree with that rich. both would be highly valuable. depends what macro you;re talking about. still moving stuff with a tripod sure you're right. but i dont shoot that kinda macro.

Yeah I love nice AF for macros too. For insects, it's incredibly handy to have.

Rich, what does the 24-70 need? Sharper corners on FX? VR? I guess those are the only two I can think of.

I don't know if I'd say the 24-70 "needs" VR but having image stabilization at this focal range is the only thing I miss from shooting my 17-55 IS on the 30D.
