Hi guys,

I know there's a few D700 users out there. I've had mine for a few weeks now and I've found that flash exposures aren't as consistent as my previous D70s. After testing it just then I found that if I'm shooting at ISO 200, 1/250, f/5.6 with the flash in TTL with no FEC the exposure is fine. But if I'm using anything other than base ISO 200 then it overexposes. When I was trying it out I had to put FEC -1.0 if I raised the aperture to ISO 400 or 800 or anything above 200. Is this normal or is there something wrong with the equipment? BTW this only seems to happen when shooting people. I tried it shooting static objects and it didn't have the same problem.

are you shooting in manual or Ap ? auto iso is off i presume ? any chance of putting a shot up with fill exif. dont have an sb600 so cant work it out my end but i've not expereinced this issue with my sb800 or 900.

are you having a similar issue with the sb80dx ?

Shooting in manual, auto ISO off. I'll put up some shots when I get home. I can't use the SB80DX as it can't be used in TTL, only manual. I'm just trying to figure out if it's my flash or the body.

You're in the east somewhere aren't you?
If so I can let you borrow my SB600 for a comparison.

I'm in the knox area, so not too far from you. Will let you know Kiwi, thanks for the offer. I'll see how my testing goes.

have you tried Ap to see if you have the same issue ?

Tried it on myself in manual and Ap just then and it made no difference.

in all the examples that you found issues with, is your subject always wearing a dark shirt ? try a lighter colour and see if it makes a difference. i think the dark shirt, dark hair and darkish background is throwing the TTL into haywire. maybe its trying to expose that large navy blue surface area ? in shot one i think it was, the face is fine but the shirt is underexposed.

have you sold you're old body already ? would be good to test it out on the d70 for comparison.

So far I think that the subjects have all been wearing dark shirts. I'll have to try with lighter shirts. It's been on matrix metering, and I did consider that it may be exposing for the dark parts. So I change it to spot and it still did the same thing. I can see what you're getting at, although I still don't know why the exposure changes as the ISO increases. I still have my old D70s so I'll do more testing tonight.
