What's a D70 worth in Oz?

Ive got the option of buying a well looked after D70 with an 18-70 lens for my kids from the same bloke I bought the 70-200 from.

Not sure what to offer for an obsolete body. I wouldn't have thought the body would be worth much.

18-70's are on ebay regularly so I would price up the lens and add $50 for the body so see what be says. If you are going to buy it you need to buy it on yiur terms.
Make sure that the body has the firmware update and do some research on BGLOD (Blinking Green Light Of Death). BGLOD was a problem with the early D70 bodies.

From what I've seen the D70(s) with a lens can go for around $400. I wouldn't pay more than $500.

Thanks fellas, I'll do my homework and take your comments above as implying I'm not an idiot for thinking about this.

Made an I'll take it at a bargain price offer. Let's see what happens, hopefully I don't insult him.

Someone will buy a DSLR on ebay regardless of what model. It's not impossible to get at least $500 for D70+18-70 on ebay. Each item is still widely sought after. I don't think you will have problem selling them separately either. And I don't think either D70 or 18-70 will get less than $200 each. It also depends on how lucky you are too.

PS: SORRY I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO SELL THE THINGS FOR HIM.
I will have to pay more attention to posts from now on. I just saw someone putting D70S+18-55 starting from $350 and I believe they will sell. That will give you some idea how much they will go for.

Yeah some people think their obsolete bodies are ancient treasures. I occasionally see D80 bodies here on private classifieds going for $800 when a reputable shop sells them used for 300-400.
And D70s or D50 for $199-299.
But they are becoming harder to find.

Keep in mind the D70 has even lower value than D70s.

Now and then I see a F60+28-80 for $600 with a note (bought for $#### when new). As if that makes any difference. Its going ebay price is around $100.
The only film body with real value now is the F6 which is still demand higher price than a brand new D90.

BTW why don't you look for a D70s instead of the D70?
I believe the S allows for CLS does it not?

On consideration I think it's better to buy what you want rather than pay reasonable money for something that's not exactly right.

In this case a D70 wasn't my first choice of body, nor was the 18-70 lens for that matter, and I sure wasn't prepared to pay $700 for the pair.

I politely suggested he put it on ebay so he can get "market price" without feeling I'm ripping him off. Anyone seen the movie the Castle - "Tell him he's dreaming".

I think I'll wait a year and kids will be a bit older and safer, then I might try and pick up a used D40/D60 or D80 for them.

Here is a D70s with 18-55 starting at $350. Let's see how far it gets.

How about a D50?
Isn't it just a D70 minus the CF slot and something else?

9yo & 7yo
Neither needs a new camera but I just thought it might get them off my back by keeping them entertained whilst I'm trying to get my shots.

I was simply thinking of bringing forward my purchase from next year to now since this guy seemed to keep his gear in perfect condition and I thought I might get a bargain. Now I know he wants too much I'll just put off the purchase until the time is right.

Buy them an ultra zoom with full manual controls. You can tell from there if they are serious about photography and if they are mature enough to handle a DSLR.

I bought them both basic point and shoots for Christmas so I can see they're sticking to it and limited by the tools I've given them.
