Holy crap, are those battle scars on his face?
Was he captured from the wild?
Looks like a superb lens.

Awesome shots, looks like a stellar lens copy.
Memo to self:
When mobile phone rings as Lion decides to go for walk don't answer it! :D
BTW. I did some hunting at the zoo as well. I spotted the "Japanese Monster Nikkor" in amongst the foliage at one stage and was able to grab a quick snap. :D

So here's a question about zoo photography......
Does the zoo have the right to sue you or force you to take a pic down if they found out that it was taken at their zoo?
Or does it only matter if you try to make money off of it?

Can't speak for your part of the world but at Melbourne Zoos (we have three) there are signs at the entrances that say photography for personal purposes is okay but you are not allowed to sell the images as the copyright remains with the zoo.
I assume that there is the ability to get a permit for a professional photographer if they had a valid reason ( or enough money).

You've got some great captures there but what's the deal with stopping down this lens?
K1W1- take that lens away from Rooz and let him go back to shooting with his 300 f/4 if posts more f/5.6 and f/7.1 images ;)
I'll bet you were smiling ear to ear when you imported these shots.
Just contemplate that those Lion shots were taken through a wire mesh fence where the mesh was only about 2" apart in a grid pattern

Just more the reason you want a shallower DOF so the fence wouldn't be visible.
lol just testing it all out rich. most of em are @ 2.8.
heres another. (60% crop)

Ya know I'm just busting on ya.
Do you notice much difference in IQ between this and your 300 f/4 when shooting stopped down? I've never used the either of those lenses but have always heard good things about both.
at 5.6 at full size there is no discernible difference. that says more about the 300/4 than anything else. magnify it and you can start picking up some fine detail differences; rememebr that most of these are 30-60% crops. and almsot as improtantly, with a 1.7tc its a 500mm f4.8 with still excellent af. there is an elephant shot i have that i'll post later and that shot gave me an insight into lens resolving power. you can almost make out every pore and spec of dust. i've never seen that level of detail in my shots before with any lens ive used.
the big difference is just pure af grunt and VR of course. its not as fast in af as the 200/2 but its blistering nonetheless. one other thing i noticed is that VR switches on IMMEDIATELY. there is no hesitation, as soon as you half press the shutter...BAM...its on. thats a very big difference from any other VR lens i've used where its maybe a half second to settle. the VR itself is quite simply superb. the build quality is superb, the handling is superb, the packaging in that bag is superb, the hood is superb. half second may not seem like alot, but imo, its a significant difference. its just a freakin work of art.

Don't hold back, what do you really think of it? ;)
You'll notice another jump up in performance like this when you add the 400 f/2.8 to your kit. I'm just saying...:D

Did you have to use a monopod or a tripod?

You don't have to use either but I have used this lens on a shoot for about 2 hours. I handheld it. The next day, my entire arm was sore.

Some people (who aren't in the know) say the difference between low grade lenses and high grade lenses is only visible at the pixel level. I always thought that high grade lenses should be just as obvious or even more so in smaller images or even thumbnails. Guess these prove I'm right :D.

its 2.85kg vs the 300/4 which was 1.4kg so its double the weight. these are all handheld and it wasnt too difficult although i would prefer to use a monopod like i have always used with the 300/4.

Ouch plus i bet the camera with batteries and grip alone weigh another 1kg or so.

Rooz- Did you do any shooting at the zoo with the TC-17 mounted?

I think he'd lent it to K1W1 so Mrs K1W1 could be just as unhappy as Mrs Rooz.:D
Oh and K1W1 I think putting a 1.7 TC on the 70-200 is a waste, you'd be better with a prime (speaking as someone who has never owned a 300mm though).

I think he had it back on his lens by the time we got to the Lions.

A 1.7TC gives me 100-340 f4.8 for a couple of hundred dollars. :)

I like the shallow DOF of the 70-200 but shooting it all the time at 200 seams a waste. I actually still see benefits in my 70-300.
Rooz- Did you do any shooting at the zoo with the TC-17 mounted?
i shot maybe 10 frames and in prety much all of em i cut the lions tail off. dumb ass.
#2 is with the TC, as is this one. you'll notice the "crazy bokeh" amplified by the dead branches on the far right. if i could really be bothered i'd just add some GB to it but i'm lazy. could probably do with a pass of USM but i cant be bothered doing that either. lol

I mentioned about this with Richards shots on his thread, is this common?
I could see a difference in his shots almost immediately. Guess it would have to do mostly with what was in the background.
yepp. the 1.7TC, (both the nikon and solingor ones ive used), does it to all lens' i've used it on. in the corners of the frame especially with a messy/ complex background and it sticks out like...well...it sticks out. lol the reason you rarely see this with my 105VR shots is cos the background is usually a solid colour so the bokeh issue is non existent.
small price to pay though. nothing a bit of PP cant fix and the IQ in center frame is still excellent. what thru me in shot 5 of my first post was the similar crazy bokeh of the long grass just behind the lion. no TC though. musta been the bad morning light and the wind blowing that grass around. dunno.

Saw that in shot 5, wild stuff. I thought for a minute you zoomed when you shot.
Tough to do with a 300. lol

Seriously, a cheap older crop body might be worth tossing in the camera bag on your next zoo visit.

OMG  I didn't even notice you got a 300/2.8 until just now. I saw these on flickr, but had no idea it was from a new lens. I think I saw 300mm and assumed it was the 300/4! So you did splurge for the VR edition I see.
NAS is a powerful thing ryan. lol i got a great deal on a used one. would never buy a lens like this new.
