I used the RRS low capacity monopod solution when I only had the 200 f/2 and then upgraded to their high capacity solution when I purchased the 400 f/2.8.

Low Capacity http://reallyrightstuff.com/tripods/03.html
High Capacity http://reallyrightstuff.com/tripods/04.html

I use their lever clamp (B2 AS II) on my Markins 20 ballhead with the tripod and their screw clamp (B2 Pro II) on the monopod head.

You are also going to want a replacement foot for the lens so that you can have the plate for the clamp installed and still be able to put your hood on in the reversed position for storage.
http://reallyrightstuff.com/rrs/Itemdesc.asp?ic=LCF%2D14&eq=LCF%2D14%2D002&Tp=

The high capacity solution is much nicer than the low capacity solution but for a 300 f/2.8 the low capacity will work just fine. If budget were an issue I would definitely get the clamps and plates before spending money on the high capacity head. The Manfrotto part is really inexpensive should you ever decide to upgrade when you realize that even with a TC 300mm just isn't enough (I've got you down for a 600mm in 2 years-lol)

Hope this helps.

And he thought that he had simply purchased a new lens. I would love to hear how he explains all the extras to Mrs Rooz. :)

RichNY
09-01-2009, 10:18 PM
Rooz- If you don't already have a monopod I'm now using a Manfrotto 681B which is terrific and very inexpensive. I was shooting for a year with a borrowed carbon fiber Gitzo and this one works just as well even with the 400 f/2.8. IMO it isn't worth spending the extra money on a carbon fiber monopod as the weight savings for only one leg is insignificant- tripods are another story.

thanks, i have 2 monopods actually. all good in that department. i love em both. the problem is the head. i have the 234 manfrotto head and am thinking of getting that QRP you linked to before. still not 10% sure how that works though.

I'm not sure where you need explaining so I'll take a blind stab.

You buy the clamp gizmo and screw it on to your 234. When I purchased mine I had them screw it on and LocTite it for me- I wasn't in the mood to go searching for the product and doing in myself. If you can sell your 234 locally it might be worth buying another one from them with the B2 Pro clamp already installed.

One installed you need a plate for the lens itself that goes into the clamp. They make plates that screw on to the foot of your lens but what you'll find is that you won't have clearance to put your lens hood on in the reversed position. The solution is a replacement foot.

Another option is to skip the monopod hardware kit and LocTite and just use the grey thumbwheel to attach the clamp to the 234. The benefit of this is that if you want to save some money you could move the clamp between your monopod and tripod depending on need. Of course once you have this on your tripod you are going to want a plate for your camera to use with the rest of your lenses that don't have their own foot. More money... oh yeah, when attaching the camera (vs. your lens) you need to decide whether you want a plate to use with or without your grip since they are different parts.

You want the LCF-14 which is a replacement foot. The only other plates you might want are for lenses like the 70-200VR and for your camera body.

I called RRS for you a few minutes ago; they ship daily to your part of the world. Their phone number is 805-528-6321 and the people who answer the phone are extremely knowledgeable.

Melbourne weather reminds me of London weather, unpredictable beyond an expectation that its likely to rain or be cold at some point regardless of the time of day or year and a royal pain in the butt.. :D

Atleast when Sydney gets wet weather it does it like most of the rest of Oz, in style by either going all out or nothing, not some half ar*ed can't make up its mind weather! Which also makes it better for more dramatic photography too! ;)

Rooz

got there at 0830, weather was fine, started to get cloudy and chilly by the time we left the zoo. by the time i got to the airport it started sprinkling, by the time my flight left it was raining. the raoin gods looked after me today.

so did the lens gods, this lens is perfect.

It's now (4.30 pm) almost dark enough for headlights, raining solidly and the cloud has settled below our elevation so visibility here at home is around 100m max. Oh, and we have had lightning and I suspect a touch of hail at one stage since I got home around 2.
