Hi,
I still have an old analogue camera (Canon Prima 115), which I like, apart from insufficient zoom range. I use Chrome film.
I am however considering buying a DC camera.
I am not sure the title "shutter lag" is really the correct name for what I would like to know.
I know what delay there is between me pushing the button (for taking a photo) and the photo actually being taken (with Prima). Not in sec but I have a feeling for it. I would like to know how does my old camera's "delay" compare to DCs.
I am looking at Canon G6. I know it is a major upgrade from Prima's features, but I might as well buy something good.
Does anyone know what is the delay between pressing the shooting button and the pic actually being taken? In comparison with my Prima 115.
This is applicable for taking taking pic in motion of course.
All replies are much appreciated.

The delay varies widely in both dCam's and film cameras. Much of the delay, in both, is actually the autofocus system. With some cameras, the delay can be reduces by bypassing the AF, either via full manual focus or using a trap-focus method. Trap-focus, when available, functions by focusing when you press the shutter button half way down allowing you to hold the button there and finish pressing when you need to take the picture. The final shutter lag is greatly reduced this way.

There are some specification listings online that will list the delay time, usually in milliseconds (ms) but this is rare. You are best off dropping by you local store and handling a few cameras to get a feel for their delays.

The general use of "shutter lag" describes the time from pressing the button to when the picture is actually captured. However, this time not only includes the firing of the shutter, but can also include the time the camera takes to determine focus and exposure, and move the lens to the correct position. There are many reviews both here and at the other well-known digicam sites that give shutter lag times, many in both autofocus mode and pre-focus mode.

The G6 is a very well-respected camera. Take a look at the reviews and see if the lag times are within your requirements. You might also look at the reviews for comparable cameras so that you know what to compare the G6 to.

Hi Alina,

The term shutter lad, as I understand it in the world of digital cameras, is the time delay between the point of pressing the shutter button and the picture being taken.

I've many friends who own the Canon G6 and I've hear lotsa good feedback. It's more of an advanced camera, somewhere between a point-and-shoot and a full fledged SLR.
