What camera is that? ISO depending on what camera you have.
The obvious choice is putting on the SB800 diffuser and bounce flash.

Are you triggering it via the pop up flash or are you using a radio trigger?
BTW what body will you be using?

Sorry not sure about the D40x. I think CLS may not be available for that model.
But you can trigger any flash with your Pop-Up as long as it has an Optical Slave mode.

hmm gonna look that up really quick. i think i might just mount the flash to the camera with my dome defuser and point it backwards..exposures have been decent that way.
no wireless flash on the d40x. wouldnt help you in this case anyway.
the safest way is to just whack the dome on and bounce it. i'd also try quite a few without the dome, flash pointed up but and raising the bounce card to throw a little light forward.
dont be stuck in one mode all night. this is a good chance to experiement a little. try TTL, try TTL BL, try bumping your iso up to 1600 and slowing the shutter down. enjoy it, learn something from it and have fun.

definitely drag the shutter. It would give you some cool background effects.

thanks guys
You didnt specify what day this was, so if I am late with suggestions, then just ignore...
I wouldnt try using the SB-800 off cam for a party.... way to difficult to get the trigger signal to the flash if there are many people around, also you dont want to be repositioning the flash every 10 minutes. I would suggest using or getting a flash bracket and use the flash on that, that will eliminate flash shadows.

There would be too much noise with ISO 1600 on a d40x, would it?

ISO 1600 is usable if your exposure brings in enough light. Well-exposed high-ISO shots aren't particularly noisy. It's shadow that tends to produce a lot of noise.

fion pretty much nailed it. but really, you shoot this way when there is little option. if you're shooting in dark conditions you are better off dragging the shutter to make the flash shots as natural as possible. i've not used a d40x so not 100% sure how it would work out but i know with my old d80 it was fine shooting at iso1600, 1/15s, f2.8 as long as you used flash to fill in shadows. rear curtain sync if they are not posing and are moving btw.
