Canon point-and-shoot cameras are pretty good. There is a usually a macro function right on the 4-way button on back for very close up shots.

I agree. Although you simply can't beat a DSLR with a dedicated macro lens, but the Canon SX20 and now the G11 would be good ones to consider. The SD line is rather good as well.
