Hi all-

Im about to hit the 10,000th photo on my D90, which I understand will reset the default file name from DSC_9999 to DSC_0001. I normally dont change the name of my photos, just leave them with the default name in a folder named after the date. So sitting in the Dec 08 folder will be a DSC_0001, and in the Aug 09 folder will soon be a DSC_0001.

Im just wondering if anyone can think of any problems that might cause. Im not worried about overwriting, they are in different folders. But Im curious whether other software apps might have trouble distinguishing between, Lightroom, Photoshop, Bridge, Smugmug, Windows Library, etc etc. Its slightly inconvenient to start renaming all my photos going forward (perhaps something cleverer like DSC10001), but I dont mind too much if it will save me hassle down the road.

For people who do regularly change their photo file names, what sort of system do you use?

Any suggestions or opinions would be great.

Thanks.

i had HEAPS of problems initially till kiwi told me how to fix it. when you import the files onto your computer, rename them with the date first then the filename and you will never had this problem again !!

so rather than the file being called dsc_001 its called 20090909-DSC_001

the problem isnt with the software, the problem is that as the shot count resets, (every 10000 photos), you have multiple images using the same filename. i think my d80 had 60k clicks on it and i had all sorts of issues with backing up files and finding what i was after etc cos the file names of heaps of phtoos was the same.

ahh that way. But didn't the folders with different dates help isolate each shot into a folder which made looking for a picture a piece of cake if you knew what date it was shot at?

yeah if you set it up that way you;re right. but when i back up all my files they all get backed up without folders, just by name. the only shtos that have individual folders are customer files. otherwise my personal filing system sucks basically. lol

Do you use a backup software??

I just use Nero to backup on DVDs and do the simple copy paste on to my external HDD which lets me keep everything in those date folders.

You can just change the first three letters ... if you like .....

I find using a discriptive naming convention a little easier to manage. I use Bulk Rename Utility it's free.

Thanks everyone for all the replies. I know it probably doesnt make a difference most of the time, especially as I keep the files in different folders. I was just worried about applications that might not make the distinction. I know some backup software for example just copies the files, without regard to the directory tree.

If the D90 is like the D300, then you can go into the menus and change the name the camera gives the files.
