I'm new to this game, and I'm desperate for a bit of help in the flash area. I just purchased a S60 even though I new the flash wasn't too hot, because I thought all the other stuff was the closest I could get to my needs. I would, however, love to improve it's flash capabilities. Am I dreaming or is it possible?

I have seen many external flash set-ups advertised on eBay stating that they suit the S60. But Steve's reveiws sez it can NOT connect to an external flash. I trust Steve more than the sellers, of course, but are they talking about the same thing? Is there something universal (or ?) out there?

My imagination was thinking something like a portable torch/spot-light thingy, or something remote  . Maybe I should contact the Canon design team...ha...ha :p .

Any feed-back would be greatly appreciated.

There are flashes that do not need to be connected to the camera in order for them to fire. These "slave" flashes are triggered by the camera's own flash. These types of flashes are handy because you can position them to the side or behind the subject for creative lighting.

If you do get a slave flash, make sure that either the flash will work with a camera pre-flash (if your's has that) or that the camera can turn off any type of pre-flash that it might have. From what I've heard, some slave flashes can be tricked into early discharge when it sees a camera's pre-flash.

Dear PhilR

Thanks heaps for the tip.

I thought there must be something out there. Where there is demand there is usually someone there to supply and make money.

I have learn't so much since I started researching to buy.

Thanks again.

Assuming you do have success and all the above problems are resolved (hopefully) - You may find it convenient to fix the flash to the camera - I can suggest a flash bracket that will fix to the tripod fixing under the camera so your external flah is mounted on top of that.
