If you're in the market for a macro lens, it's well worth looking at the depth of field obtainable.

A 50mm lens focussed at 1 foot will give exactly the same field of view as a 100mm lens focussed at 2 feet.

The depth of field from the 50mm lens at 1 foot will be exactly the same as a 100mm lens focussed at 2 feet.

Not convinced? Try using DOFmaster.com.

The only thing different between the 50mm and 100mm lens will be perspective and for macro shots, perspective is a complete non-issue.

As an addendum...

Longer macro lenses have a use - to distance you from the subject. For example, a 180mm macro lens will get you a lot further away from the black widow you're trying to photograph although personally I'd be using a can of Raid.
