My favorite lens, my Tokina 12-24, that I use on my d-50 got damaged.
My camera case slipped off my backpack belt just as we were starting our hike to Half Dome! Camera was still in the case, but it must have hit just right. Picked up my camera and heard that awful broken glass sound...
Turns out it was a UV cover that was broken. I cleared out the glass into the trash and continued on my way. Luckily I was able to get some pics but forgot about lack of UV filter so many have the washed out look.
Question is, the metal ring is still on the lens and I cannot get it off for the life of me. Anyone have any ideas? I dont' want to break this lens, we all know how much they go for.
Thanks for any help.
buy one of these and ignore any other advice.

they are absolutely brilliant.
Check the odds and ends drawer in the kitchen first. You may have one of those grippy things for opening jars. They work almost as well and are free if you already own one.

Hope you manage to get the filter ring off. As a side note, not having a UV filter on will not cause washed out photos.

Another case study of why a filter should be used. Couldn't it be forced out with a pair of pliers?

I am certianly not a pro. Washed out was a poor choice of words on my part. Its the clouds that look bad. This filter always seemed to help that problem. I managed to get a few good ones anyway, going to have to learn how to post here.
Thanks for the replies!

I'm surprised that a UV filter makes the clouds look better. Just from my own experience a UV filter has only ever been for protection and hasn't made any change to the image. Although they do say that in higher altitudes a UV filter can actually cut out UV light to sort of dehaze a scene. A polariser would make the clouds pop a lot more than a UV filter, although would have to be careful on an ultrawide like the 12-24 as it would cause the sky to be deeper blue in parts. Did you manage to get the filter off without damaging the lens? Post some of the pics when you get time.

Resize it first
+3 It's huge.
Most people use images between 800 pixels and 1024 pixels wide.

I'm a photo uploadng virgin....
I have Elements 5.0. I can crop them and do some other stuff, but can't figure out how to resize them. Anyone point me in the right direction?

Go to Image on the top toolbar. Then hit resize, then image size. Then change to the desired size in the dialogue box that pops up

How do you know how to resize it, yet keep the same ratio? I think I tried that once, and had trouble having the pic get slightly stretched in one direction or another.
Thanks for the help

FWIW, I have Irfanview as my default image viewer as it opens any image in a split second and is pretty good at resizing either individually or as a batch - well worth checking out. http://www.irfanview.com/

Click the drop down on pixels and change it to percent, then pick a percentage (40%) and then resize. At least that's the way elements 7 works.

And you can create CD slideshows with music, add watermarks, crop, adjust and do all sorts of things. I've been using Irfanview for 7 or 8 years now and imo every person regardless of whether they are interested in photography should have it on their PC.
