Hi, I found a 580 ex flash for $400aus, do you think that is a good price?, and what is the difference between the 580 ex and the ex II.
Thank you for reading. :)

Right now with Canon's instant rebates, the 580EX II is selling for $370USD brand new. I don't know the exchange rates.
As far as I know (I own the 580EX2) the main differences are the 580EX2 has...
1. Metal foot instead of a plastic foot
2. Improved battery door.
3. A little lighter
4. Better weather sealing.
5. It now has a thyristor.

Thank you Flipmarc and Rys for your replies, I don't think we have the canon rebates here in Australia, and it costs $600 for a new flash here, 370 are
466 aussie dollars.
I thought it was the 430ex that had the plastic foot, and what is a
thyristor?
Thank you again. :)
A thyristor - a component that allows the flash to work in automatic mode rather than manual or camera-controlled mode. IE - set the camera to f8 and the flash at f8 and the flash will provide what it thinks is sufficient light.
Don't know about the 430EX2 but the difference is plastic foot on the 580EX and metal on the 580EX2.

I don't consider the thyristor mode on the 580EX II to be a feature since it doesn't actually work properly. I don't know if 400 AUS is a good price for a 580EX because I don't know how much the 580EX II sells for in Australia. They're both excellent flashes.

The 580ex II sells for $650 in a store and about $600 at a online store(grey market).
Thank you Rys for the explanation. :)
Oh. just another thought, for the same amount of money that I can get for a used 580 ex I might be able to get a new 480 ex II. decisions, decisions.
Thank you all for your help, I hope I'm not being to annoying. :o

You probably mean 430EX II. It's about a stop less powerful than, and lacking a few features of, the 580s but still a good unit.

Thanks Don, I'm not good at remembering model numbers.
I suppose if I not happy with the 430ex II I can add the 580 later on.
Since I've been on this forum, I have changed with regards to gear,
My first post I said that I just wanted a camera body, 1 lens and a flash.:p

Quick Google search :) http://photo-tips-online.com/review/canon-580ex-vs-canon-580ex-ii/
Should give you some idea if it's worth buying over the 580exII or the 430exII.
