Thanks guys!

My very first outing with the 400mm and the 50D... and I got these..

All are Hand Held and were shot in JPG mode in S Quality because I only had a 1GB card on me for the trip:o Hardly any PP, only levels, cropped and re sized..

In Love We Are.. Notice the heart shape formed by their necks!

Nice shots....especially for ISO 1600....odd that I got terrible pics when I tried the 50D....must be the L lens... ;)

What made you choose the 400mm over the 100-400mm??

What made you choose the 400mm over the 100-400mm??

I've also received a couple of PMs with the same question, so I thought it would be a good idea to give a detailed explanation on why i did what i did...

- 400 L is one of canons specialist lens for birding - especially BIF. Also, for birds in flight where subject is moving, IS is of no use anyway

-For BIF, tripods are very difficult to use due to the unpredictable nature of their flight path, and with its light hand holdable weight, the 400 L makes a lot of sense. In fact, it is the lightest 400mm available today - every ounce makes a difference in a lens that is intended for hand holding.

-400 L absolutely has the fastest auto focus performance of any canon super tele this side of $4000. This blazing AF performance is made possible due to its very simple internal design with only 7 Optical elements (compared to the 17elements in the 100-400L) Blazing fast AF is very critical for BIF photography. Having used it for a day now, I can vouch that the L is for Lightning! You can almost hear the thunk when it snaps into focus. Holy s***! The first time I used it, I was so startled by its speed, that I missed the shot - Yeah, it is that fast. If I said it nearly torqued the body out of my hands, I'd be exaggerating - but not by much!

-400 L is substantially sharper at 400mm f/5.6 than the 100-400 L at 400mm f/5.6... and with noticeably better quality bokeh

-100-400 L has the 1st generation IS system providing only 1 and half stop of image stabilization... compared to the 4th generation 4-stop IS on the newer zooms like the 70-200 f/4 L IS...not worth much really in my books...

-There's 'supposedly' a lot of variation in the quality of the 100-400L's produced by canon (do some googling on this)... sometimes people changed 2-3 lenses till they got a 'sharp enough copy'.... I didn't have the option to do that and didn't want to get stuck with an average copy!

-I didn't fancy the push-pull zoom mechanism on the 100-400

-I just had to have the 70-200 f/4 L IS... and having the 100-400 L along with the 70-200 would be too much of a focal length overlap and waste of $$

This is why I bought the 400 L instead of the 100-400L! This is not a post to bash the 100-400L and it does not in any way mean that the 100-400 is an inferior product... it has its many pluses, the biggest of which is undoubtedly the huge range it gives you.

With the 400 L, you absolutely must have another lens between your 18-xx and the 400mm... which is not really necessary in case of the 100-400L

In my scenario and for the find of photography I intend to pursue, the 400L simply made the most sense :)

If I had to compare these to guns, the 100-400 would be a shot gun, strong and powerful and versatile, whereas the 400L would be a sniper rifle.. not really as versatile, but truly unbeatable in the task for which it was made:)

Darn i missed the tag.

Great shots, i especially love 2, 6, 7 8.

Im so used to seeing in 35/50mm now that i dont think i could use a 400 prime!

Gezz that must be weird to pre-focalise, but i guess you get used to it :o

Love this one Viky.

Congrats; that's some serious upgrading your doing!! You can't go wrong with the 70-200 f/4 IS.
I've thought about the 100-400 or the 400 f/5.6 myself - you make some very good arguments for the 400. Its hard to beat L primes; my 200 f/2.8 is my sharpest lens and has the best bokeh as well.

Very nice pics Viky and congrats on the new gear. I was bit unwhelmed by both the 100-400 L and 400 L, though it looks like you got a nice copy of the latter. For me, I love the 300 F4 L IS - talk about sharp & fast focusing (of course the 300 2.8 is king but [way] out of my price range.)

Thanks Rooz!

Well, I must admit, having sold off most of my lenses and the 400D, at one point of time, I was really tempted to jump over to the dark side and get myself the still unrivaled D300... The only thing that stopped me from doing this were these very lenses!

Its truly a shame that Nikon doesn't make similar ones!

Nice shots....especially for ISO 1600....odd that I got terrible pics when I tried the 50D....must be the L lens... ;)

He He.. if I recall correctly, you also had the fabulous 16-35 L on that body!

How does the 50D feel....coming up from the 400D that is....???

I've not really done any controlled testing or analysis yet, but having used it for a 2hrs+ photo tour, the one thing that immediately comes to mind is how much faster and responsive the AF System is compared to the 400D! I know, the new USM lenses are a major factor in this, but even the trusty old Sigma 18-50 is now screeching into focus as if it were on steroids!

The 2nd thing that comes to mind is how 'convenient' this body is:) All the usual controls fall easily at hand... you don't even need to take your eyes off the viewfinder for most of the settings.. plus, the Auto ISO from 100-1600 is really helpful... works like a charm in AV mode!

Also, you get a very strong and reassuring grip on the body... can easily carry the body with 400L mounted with just one hand holding the camera from the side grip!

Not to forget, really love that 6.5fps too!

Darn i missed the tag.

Great shots, i especially love 2, 6, 7 8.

Thanks Csae!

Yes, i had this planned up for a while thought... but I guess, I'm done for a long time now:)

I've thought about the 100-400 or the 400 f/5.6 myself - you make some very good arguments for the 400

The single biggest factor that goes against you buying the 100-400L would be that you already have three great lenses covering the lower half of that FL!

Congrats Viky

Thanks Drama!

Though I've read numerous times about the existence of 'not so sharp' copies of the 100-400L, but never really heard the same about the 400 5.6 L :o

As for me, having already used my 300mm on birds, I wanted something that gave me more reach without TC's.. hence the choice:)

I suppose a lot of recovery through PP to achieve that^^^ very nice shot!!!

I did indeed have the lovely 16-35mm on the 50D but it didn't seem to focus significantly faster than my 400D with the same lens and my poor 400D squeaks when I mount the huge 70-200mm...Didn't know Auto ISO existed so never tried it...I agree the 6.5fps is great...especially for bird shots....hmm...maybe my expectations are just too high (maybe I need a 5D instead :D)...

Anyway I'm thinking in investing in a second hand 40D going for $500 (with battery grip, 18-55mm lens and delsey bag) which is a good $350 less than the current 40D second hand market prices locally. Still contemplating....
