Just a fun poll. Do you use a point and shoot or are ya too good for it now that you have your big bad DSLR?

I just bought a G10 on sale for $430 (reg $580). I love the little thing so far.

I'm a point and shooter, even with my DSLR :p

Just because I have the DSLR, I don't feel that I have to use it in every occasion. I still have my old S3, along with an SD630 & SD880is P&S.

I don't own one...I use my sisters cybershot when I need to take videos or when it's raining!!!

Though I want to buy one cause I want to take more snapshots in malls, restaurants and hotels where my DSLR seems to make some people uneasy....

I ordered one of these phones for a friend of mine. It came in the mail last Friday. The pre-order cost me $571.xx. Right now, it will cost $699.

Nice shots there FLiPMaRC....those looks pretty nice for a mobile phone....

Btw I remember reading somewhere that the Samsung 8mp mobile phone (the one that has optical zoom) performs better than a Canon Ixus camera....will dig that link out....

Edit: does not perform better but as good as a Canon Ixus 70

Yes, I use a ixus 950 is. I nearly bought a s3 is on ebay, but I got outbid.
I use my p & s more than my slr at the moment because I'm still getting used to my slr. Maybe I need a flash to get more in focus.

I don't own one, but if i could afford a small one, i would.

Definitely more comfortable to carry around, though i do remember being frustrated with them generally, if im gonna stop and take a picture im gonna do it from a-z.

My daughter took control of the Canon A700, but I liked it a lot while I was still allowed to use it. I've been thinking about something small to keep in a pocket, but then my wife suggested that since my current cell phone contract was expired that I should think about an iPhone. I pick up the new one on Friday.

Very nice Rooz! I was looking at the LX3 but in the end I wanted something with a hotshoe and I like it's rangefinder styling.
From what I read about the G10 I wasn't expecting much from it's high ISO ability but it's not too bad....

ISO 800

I'll agree with this. I have an ancient D1X in my paper's office that I did a comparison--high ISO (800! :P) VS the blackberry's 1.3MP.
It was a joke. :D

i can't hardly wait. the better camera alone is worth upgrading to, but i'll be quadrupling my storage space, adding 30fps video, and voice commands too! just being able to say "call johnny" while driving instead of trying to navigate through the phone...or "play cardio playlist" will save around 5 steps or more.

anyway, yea i'm excited. i'm a realist, i'd never take a p&s with me everywhere...but if it's on my phone i will. and i've got some good pics from it too. just random crap that happens or i come across. things i wanna document. i've always said the best pics come from phone cameras.

Lemme guess...the Blackberry would be used for high school football if it wasn't for the shutter lag? :D :p

all this phone/camera talk reminds me of my very first digital camera. It played MP3s and shot video too!

I present to you the Kodak MC3 from the year 2001

My first digital camera was the Olympus D460 (http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/D460/D460A3.HTM) Zoom. 1.3MP. Paid $450 from Amazon back in 2000 :D IIRC, my 32mb SmartMedia card was $50 ... LOL!

LOL, I went all out and bought the 128MB card because I wanted more room for my MP3s. When I bought it I think it was $1 per MB!

No, the blackberry's image was horrendous when compared to the high ISO image from the D1X and that thing is ancient.

Nice colors, Nick. I'm sure someone considers that a retro look and has created a plugin to automate it.

P&S definitely. Have a Canon G10 and Sony Cybershot W290. Both work surprisingly well for casual snapshots when it is just too inconvenient to carry the DSLR. Sometimes I vacation on a motorcycle and can stick the P&S in pocket or saddlebag. Also- as someone mentioned- the DSLR can be intimidating to others in certain circumstances. G10 is a very flexible P&S...and good as long as you have favorable lighting.

I have my S3 and my camera phone so take those to events where the safety of my 40D might be put at risk but generally I use the 40D all the way:)

My first digital camera was Nikon CPX880, then Sony DCF717, in addition to that i got excellent IxusV2, Ixus 400, and later added Ixus700. all cameras were fine except for CPX880 which tended to blow reds (but had excellent optic and else).

i confess i cannot shoot P&S anymore and if i would pick digital i would go with G10 or similar. true P&S do not work for me anymore.

however i have to say Ixus models of Canon are perhaps the best P&S compacts you can get and yield very nice images if you tweak them a bit and fool around auto metering by recomposing.

I'm about to jump on the new Lumix ZS3

size
25-300mm optical zoom (f/3.3 - f/4.9)
720p AVCHD Lite video with stereo "Dolby" recording and ability to fully zoom - it even has a dedicated video record button.
"Intelligent" Auto (http://www.acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=314509&page=5#) mode that seems to handle regular shots well
fairly good IQ
2 IS modes
decent price (http://www.acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=314509&page=5#) (399)

I look forward to taking videos with it - looking at some of the samples it does rather well in low-light as well.

only bad thing is lack of manual controls but from the looks of it, I think it will do "good enough" in the iA mode and the pros outweigh.

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/ZS3/ZYFRONT-MD.JPG http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/ZS3/ZYBACK-MD.JPG http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/ZS3/ZYTOP-MD.JPG

iA mode - 1/500sec f/4.9 at 300mm equiv @ ISO 800 - it automatically detects movement and increases ISO thereof
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/images-90/high.jpg

2 other cams I considered:

Fuji FinePix F200EXR - uses pixel binning to simulate HDR effect - kinda cool but 6MP in that mode - but video mode is lacking.

Canon SD970 - OK but controls look quirky, and no AVCHD video

I used to own a Canon S2IS and I really liked that thing - I gave it away to a guy at work last year, but I keep thinking about picking up another P&S. I really miss the video capability of the S2IS. Sadly, the only photo that I have hanging in my house is a seashell macro taken with my old S2IS!!
