Hello,
I bought a nice Nikon Coolpix 5700 two years ago. Everything was ok, but last month a problem. At the service I was told that they needed to change a CCD (put a new one). OK. I understandit. But the problem is the price. They wanted the amount which was 60 % of a new one (at that moment). I think they want to overcharge me (rip off, sorry). I refused, and now still without a camera.
Do you think I am right? Is it possible such a high price (compare with a new one)?

whats the price to replace the CCD?
I don't have any direct experience with the newer digital cameras, but such repair prices are common with today's equipment. The manufacturing process is so automated that assembling and testing a new camera require far less human (read: expensive) intervention than both disassembling and reassembling by hand. Major repairs on mid-line cameras have, for many decades, cost over 1/2 the replacement cost. Models lower in the line generally cost even more, as a percentage of their replacement price, than the more expensive models.

There are some new rebates from Nikon that may make the decision to replace the camera easier. (if it's that expensive of a repair)

Another reason why older cameras tend to have costlier replacement fees is because the parts are a lot harder to come by. I would also recommend that you get a new camera, even though the 5700 is still on the market. At least, try and get Nikon or whoever to give you back your camera. It's yours. They can't take it away.
