View Full Version : GM vs Ford, Nikon vs Canon,...
Terry Lane has written an interesting little missive about the psychology behind camera brand loyalty in today's press in Australia. It's a good read although nothing that most of us probably don't know.

The fun part is to take the quiz down towards the bottom of the article.
 :o New cameras coming up for me. Bye guys.
lol good read. this part was my favourite...
At the other end of the brand personality scale is the Leica. All Leica compact cameras are, in reality, Panasonic cameras, but with the addition of the little red badge and a huge difference in price. The Leica D-Lux 4 is priced almost exactly double the price of the identical Panasonic LX-3. How can this be? Leica devotees reckon that the cameras are not identical because the famous German company has sprinkled some magic fairy dust on the sensor and transformed them from mundane Asian gadgets into optical/mechanical masterpieces of Teutonic craftsmanship. Neither Panasonic nor Leica is saying anything.
Want a good deal on a little red badge?

Article was interesting even though, as you say, it doesn't really tell us anything we didn't know already.
The "personality quiz" linked near the end http://tinyurl.com/q6f5tj was fun.
In my film SLR days budget kept me to Russian Zenit cameras for a long time. When I finally had enough money for a "real" SLR I bought a Pentax ME Super, because I really wanted aperture priority auto-exposure, but couldn't afford the equivalent Nikon.
Taking the test I came out as an Olympus... ironically the the OM-whatever at the time would have been my second choice after the Pentax. The only Olympus I ever owned was my first real digital camera, a 2Mp point and shoot I bought in 2001, model escapes me... it replaced my stolen Sony Mavica floppy-disk camera. I was utterly delighted with it. It was the camera that got me back into the idea of "photography" rather than just taking snapshots. Sadly it stopped working literally a few days after the warranty expired. Olympus customer support answer was basically "Oh well... too bad" so I replaced it with a Nikon Coolpix CP5700 and I have been a Nikonian ever since (CP8700, D50, D300)

That would have been and OM1 or OM2 in those days. I had the original ME then traded up to an ME Super of which we still have two in the house somewhere with a bunch on lenses.

Eh, Olympus:
"You are one of the idealistic Olympians of the camera world. Always on the side of the weakest. A beacon to be seen from a long distance, upright but fading. A bit here, there and everywhere. Often ignored by the others and overlooked by their own kin. With so little room for the nice guys in this world would anyone really miss you if you decided to sell cars instead?"
At least I'm a nice guy :p

The quiz link is blocked for me by the provider...
Here is mine...
Pentax
As the enthusiastic Pentaxian you have the soul of the true photographer. A strong believer in your brand but always living in the shadow of you big brothers, doomed to wander in their footsteps taking pictures that have already been taken. Still you love your gear and probably wouldn't swap brands until well after they went out of production.
Im going to go shoot myself now:(

What type of Camera are you?
Nikon
You're a Nikonian and a true Professional. Forever the perfectionist who always wants the most from the equipment. You see the world in tiny details and a day job as "pixel peeper" would probably be a dream come true.
Well it looks like I'm a Nikon guy... very interesting... does this mean I made the right decision switching fron Canon? :D

Olympus? I thought the only two possibilities were Nikon or Canon. Not many Olympus cameras around to buy though.
Self-portrait?
LOL. Nah, I wouldnt wanna ruin my equipment by subjecting it to that kind of abuse!
