Personally, I think LCD screen protectors are a marketing gimmick. And at worst, they may degrade your viewing image.

I've owned eight digital cameras, and not once have I ever scratched a screen.

If you were to impact the screen sufficiently to physically damage it, then I'm guessing there's NO "protector" that'll... um... protect it.

Cheers :)

I dont use them, but i can see why one would.

That being said, the point is to protect, so a glass one would be more fragile then the LCD itself, i'd definitely go for plastic.

when i had my a300, i never used one for a while then i finally got the OEM hard plastic one just before i left for vacation.
i was lucky i got it cause at the end of the first day in London, the LCD cover was all scratched up due to the button my my jacket.
the camera was hanging from my neck but i still had one hand holding it so it didn't bounce around but yet the walking motion caused it to rub and pretty much scratched the LCD cover to hell.
anyway i could just imagine not having the cover on. i probably would have cried if i the screen itself would have gotten scratched.

i'm just scared about scratches and the smudges caused by my face.

I don't think it will get scratched by your face. Unless you have one of those really metallic Terminator faces. Smudges you can just wipe off.

yeah now that you mention it, the camera does hang by the zippers and stuff. that's it. i'm going to get a protector.

My Nikon D80 LCD protector was scratched by the bag inner compartment zipper. Now the protector is lost and I replace it with a plastic type, and the vision now is much better compared to the original protector. I saw the optical glass type on ebay and was tempted but maybe not now since the plastic one I have is doing the job well. They don't cost too much either so if you like it try it.

I just put one of those stick on films that you use on PDA's over the screen.
On Nikons at least there is a solid protector over the LCD built into the body of the camera. What you touch on the back of the camera is NOT the LCD screen.

i'm going to go with the optical glass screen protector. i've had the plastic screens for my phones but sooner or later they tend to somewhat peel a bit at the edges after normal wear and tear. so i'm going to see if this optical glass screen is better.
