You guys ever did something custom DIY style, that you wanted to patent?

I build a studio type frame, sort of like an infinity wall, and i've been getting some feedback that i should patent the design or something but i have no idea as to the steps for such a thing.

The trick is, it can hold multiple paper rolls, stretched muslims, and is a 6 piece assembly type, so you could choose to use any combo of the pieces for the purpose.

I haven't seen anything ressembling it so far.

Anyone with some experience on the topic ?

Just file copyright first - if you can in Canada. Then apply for the patent at the patent office.

The last time I've heard of a patent being made by someone (an organic chemistry professor who was a colleague of my professor), it cost him something like $20,000 Cdn twelve years ago.

Copyright applies to all original literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works.
So I don't think this is of much use for a technical design. You get copyright protection as soon as you write something down, but it offers you no protection for the ideas contained in that document.
