I just received a TAMRON 18-270MM lens for my Canon Rebel XSi.

The lens will only zoom (by rotating the ring from the wide-angle end to about 100mm where it will not extend further toward the zoom (270 mm) end of the range. However, if the extended lens tube itself is rotated, it will continue to extend to its full extent (and back again with no problem).

So, when zooming with the knurled ring, it hangs at ~100mm and can only be extended from there by turning the lens tube itself. And it can be continuously and smoothly extended from 18 => 270 (and back again) by during the lens tube itself (but not with the knurled ring).

The lens is clearly defective, but while I wait for a response from the eBay seller from whom I purchased it, I thought I'd just drop a post over here to see if there is any "home remedy" for this issue.

Thanks.

I'd call TAMRON directly and see if they could offer some insight on this. The six-year warranty should cover this kind of issue and I would think twice about even opening the lens while it is STILL covered by it. Losing the warranty does not seem like a good idea.

That could be a problem for warranty repairs unless it is an "authorized dealer" using ebay as an additional marketing avenue.

From the Tamron site:
AUTHENTICITY:
"You can check the authenticity of the product you have/plan to purchase by locating the silver hologram Tamron USA Authorized Dealer/Six-Year Warranty logo sticker on top of the lens box and/or by completing the Tamron Online Warranty Registration. You may also call Tamron at 1-800-827-8880 to verify the serial number."
ELIGIBILITY:
"The Warranty shall not extend to anyone other than the original purchaser of the lens or the person for whom the lens was purchased as a gift. This Warranty is valid only in the Continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii, and is valid only upon presentation of a valid proof of purchase from an authorized Tamron dealer "

http://www.tamron.com/lenses/prod/18270_vc.asp (choose the "Warranty" tab)

So...if you are 2nd (or later) owner purchasing from a 3rd party on evil-bay, you are SOL and just took a defective product off someone else's hands.

the 2 words "problem" and "tamron" go together like bacon and eggs really.

good points tizeye. i often see the same thing in ads saying "still under warranty" but it rarely extends past the original owner.

You know ... I wish I hadn't participated in this thread ... I did not mean to draw attention to it. Good luck.

Quite honestly I doubt there's much you can do aside from claiming damage in transit.

Personally, having used Tamron lenses in my film days and having reduced from 3 to 2 for digital, I don't think highly of them based upon my experience of them. In fact, I'd say the Canon 18-55 kit lens is a lot better than any Tamron lens ever could be.

Knowing of the luck you have experienced with your TAMRON/Canon-mix, Rhys, I would whole-heartedly agree with you. Stick to the more pricey Canon-lenses ... and totally forget ever using third-party. It really is a poor option for you.

I mean, just because I had seven TAMRONs in my bag, for the Canon EOS 20D ... don't let that experience count for anything. I moved to SONY ... and with good reason. Thing of it was ... it wasn't because of the lenses.

Aach, who knew?

If it was paid for through Paypal you could try to claim fraud. Its pretty tricky though, it all depends on how the lens was described in the auction page. The final price also plays a part in how much you can actually do.
