View Full Version : When are we getting a mobile forum view?
I believe that the vBulletin software now has the option of a mobile view for those with Internet enabled phones.
When will DCResource be updating to allow this view?

It's doable. Anyone else interested?
Not personally - I have internet capable phones but never use the facility. However, I have seen plenty people in the local Barnes and Noble and the local Books A Million bookshops, using the wifi with their iPhones etc.

I'd be interested. Is it a huge amount of work for you, Jeff?

I use Opera Mini on my Samsung Instinct and can view the forum just fine. Many mobile browsers have a "mobile view" where page elements are truncated for phone viewing. And with today's mobile broadband speeds, most website load quickly. However, if it isn't too labor intensive (vBulletin no doubt has ready made layouts for mobile I imagine, or they should at least), a mobile version would be prudent just for convenience, esp. those times where I can't access the broadband network and I'm using the old slow one.
My wife uses Verizon dial-up wireless networking which can vary from 15kbps up to full broadband speeds. We have no problems even at 15kbps.
It's doable. Anyone else interested?
I guess that i have to put my hand up. :)
I do from time to time browse here on my iPhone so a mobile version would make things that little bit easier.
I think its definitely something to start investing time in since that mobile internet is becoming a very big thing especially when the hyped smartphones start coming out this mid year

Sorry... nup.
Absolutely no interest from me. As far as I'm concerned, anything that potentially detracts from the core reason for this site's existence — camera reviews, pure and simple — is time, effort and money wasted.
You'd have to be a photography 'tragic' to even need to check out this site from your mobile or Blackberry or iPhone or whatever on the road surely?
Cheers :)

Hey Jeff--
Any developments on this? I'd really like, if it wasn't a huge amount of work for you.

Okay, thanks. I can't get it to work with picasaweb. The forum software tells me the URL isn't valid.
Psh get a decent phone and you wont need mobile a version lol...

vBulletin is basic enough in design that mobile browsers truncate it just fine, in my limited experience.

I change my vote! I'm using my Blackberry more and more now. Ever since I saw the WAP version of crackberry.com's forums, I'm convinced that it would be excellent to have a similar deal here. The standard version is do-able on my Blackberry since it has a good screen, but the WAP versions are so much better. They cut out the crap and minimize the scrolling.

Having a good screen helps. I have a Palm Pre and it's fantastic for forum viewing, even standard versions. Whatever happens, I just hope that there will be an option to select a version, unlike other websites which force you to use a mobile version if browsing from a phone.
I'm going to have to have a go at doing a mobile version of my site. I really don't feel like doing java slideshows but if I must...

Crackberry.com is on vBulletin and it uses WAP. I'm not sure if it's a simple plugin or what but it doesn't seem to be a template per se. It's just the forum stripped down to text and text links.
Here's their forum: http://forums.crackberry.com/
