I have Digital Canon Rebel XSI. I need a f2.8 lens. I photograph everything from portraits to sports what length would you recommend and which brand. I was thinking somewhere around 28mm-130mm. Is there anything out there that matches this? and if not I am open to any suggestions!!!! But the key here is I am on a budget! Hoping to not pay more than 500
you're dreaming on cost.
tamron 28-75 or sigma 24-70 are probably your closest matches in that budget, but hardly something you;d be able to use for sports. sigma's 50-150/2.8 is probably the closest for the application but its runs at around $700ish.

I honestly didn't think such a thing existed, but a quick search found this for $600, you may be able to get it used for cheaper.

$600 is not too bad, where is that?

For portraits and sports the Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 would be your best bet. Youll pay at least $650 for it though.

Sigma 50-150 is heavy. Couple with the flash it can be clumsy so make sure to have the assembly in your hands before deciding. Also if you work space is limited then it can present another problem. I know someone who also have this lens and thinks it's too long for portrait. Personally it's not my favourite lens but everyone for his/her own so do try it out; it might work for you.

.... I was thinking somewhere around 28mm-130mm....
Just to make sure... Are you aware that for Canon has a crop factor of 1.6? Has you taken into consideration of this 1.6x crop factor when deciding on your range?
