I want to get a new camera in the next week or so. I've been looking at the Panasonic Lumix TZ5 and am now interested in learning more about the Olympus Stylus 9000. Would like to know of other comparable cameras to consider.

Budget: Up to $350, but of course would prefer to spend less.

Features: Compact, wide angle, 10X zoom, Image Stabilization. Don't need manual controls.

Megapixels: not important to me.

Use: I want a basic point and shoot. Don't need for any particular venue as photos are primarily for general family use for outdoor activities, inside get togethers ( parties, school events, etc.), and travel.

We don't usually make big prints.

I need to replace my nikon coolpix 5900 which has broken. The one feature I want to improve upon is the zoom.

Also, I prefer a camera that is more ergonomically held -- I find the tiny slim cameras with small controls problematic. On the other hand, I want to carry it in my purse, or perhaps a large jacket pocket, without adding too much weight.

Advice?

How about this baby (it's at runout pricing ATM)...

Panasonic TZ5 (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/panasonic/dmc_tz5-review/)

I'm guessing it'd suit your needs perfectly.

Cheers :)

I have been zeroing in on the Panasonic TZ5, but after reading this site for the last couple of days, I am intrigued by the new Panasonic ZS3 and am wondering if it is somehow worth the extra money. I want the camera in the next two weeks and I haven't found any place near me that sells this new camera.

In Australia, the TZ7 (as we call it downunder) is $150 more than the TZ5 — which would be the the decider for me personally.

Go with the TZ5 from an online store while it's still around, and save some dollars. The "new" bits on the TZ7 just aren't worth that much (again, to me).

Cheers :)

what about the difference between the Panasonic TZ5 and the new Panasonic ZS1, as they are nearly the same price. I've looked at the different features but can't seem to decide between them. Any thoughts?

Where do you see the ZS1 price nearly the same as TZ5? What prices?

On Amazon I see the TZ5 for $220 and the list ZS1 for $320 when it comes out in a month or two. I don't think the ZS1 is worth $100 more.

I thought the ZS1 was to be priced at $299. The TZ5 price you quote from Amazon is lower than I had seen it priced locally.

why not?http://photosnag.com/img/3322/n09x0302vnsn/clear.gif
The TZ5 has a better LCD than ZS1 and an extra 2x zoom isn't worth $100 to me. Plus the ZS1 isn't even available yet.

I'm going with the TZ5. Thanks for all advice.
