We need help choosing a camera:

* What budget have you allocated for buying this camera? Under $400

* What size camera are you looking for? Or does size not matter at all to you?
Doesn't matter too much. Not horribly bulky for travel but doesn't need to be tiny at all. Some of the cameras are just too small.

How many megapixels will suffice for you?
Our current camera is 4 or 5, anything more than that is fine :)

* What optical zoom will you need? Standard

* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10)
7

* What will you generally use the camera for?
Pictures of our 2.5 year old and new baby. We need quick response to get good pictures of them.

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not?
Sometimes -

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos? Yes - current camera does not do that well.

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos?
Kids in action

Are there particular models you already have in mind?
Not yet

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)
Image stabilization would be nice.

We would prefer a viewfinder because we don't think you can always see the screens well in bright light, and I think the picture is better stabilized.
We got the inlaws a Canon A540 for Christmas - it is nice, but we thought was kinda slow from the time you pressed the button to when the picture actually took.
We don't really need or want to worry about changing lenses.

Some of your requirements will have to take a back seat.

There are Fuji ultracompacts that are Ok in low light, but they are quite small, not so quick, and lack a viewfinder.

The Sony H10 and H50 models are hefty compacts with good speed, not so great in low light. The H50 is a bulky SLR-like model with electronic viewfinder, the H10 lacks a viewfinder.

Yes I'd say Fuji F40 or F50 are the best choices. Or the new F200 for more money.
