hey everyone, first time poster.

I'm looking for a DSLR, been leaning towards a Nikon or Canon. i've been out of the photography game for a while (been using point-n-shoot digital cams since 2001ish, and was using a 35mm Pentax for more than a decade before that).

im looking for a camera with a Continuous shooting mode, but with a user-defined interval. i want to be able to define how often i want it to shoot (i want it to set it to take pictures every 5-10 seconds, for about a 10 minute period, or indefinately).

i looked through the PDF manual for the D40, but it doesnt seem the interval can be user-set.

it would also be beneficial to have it be able to shoot in an automatic mode during that time (lighting conditions will vary).

what i'm going to be doing, is mounting the camera to a roll-cage, in a car. i want it to take shots every 5, 10, or maybe 15 seconds.

can anyone recommend a camera that has such a feature?

I don't know of a camera with the feature you are looking for. I do know Canon make a remote with a timer (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/164271-REG/Canon_2477A002_Timer_Remote_Controller_TC_80N3.htm l#features) that will do exactly as you ask.

that remote looks like it would do just exactly want i need, but i'd like to avoid having something external.

The D300 does that.

You can set up how many photos you want to take and what the interval between each photo is.

For the auto mode you could set that up effectively with matrix metering and AF-A for focus.

EDIT;

The new D5000 also has this feature so you could use that camera

The D5000 will also give you video and the ability for the driver (I assume) to look over their shoulder and see the pivoting LCD.

i was actually thinking the same thing about the LCD screen. a little bit dangerous while driving, but good for checking the shot angle before driving off.

this isnt going to be my only purpose for the camera, but i spend alot of time at the Nurburgring racetrack in Germany every year. i was using a Canon HF10 hd camcorder last summer. good for HD video, but supremely lacking in still shots.

if you check out youtube, theres a lot of people uploading their Nurburgring lap videos, if you want to get an idea of what im after.

i dont think i would plan on using the HD video feature in the D5000, looks like its limited to 5 minute shots, not really worth my time. ill keep my HF10 for that.

thanks for the info, i think i know what im buying this summer!
