I know I'm limited in choice of cameras in $140 to $300 range, but, anyway, are there any suggestions? I have had no experience with photography for over 50 years, but I learn well.

Perhaps a little more information?

If you would fill out the questionnaire in the top post in this thread, it would help a lot in terms of recommendations.

Nikon has recently come out with the L100, which is very good for folks who want a simpler camera. It also has very good handling ability. Other similar cameras to consider are the Kodak Z8612IS and the Kodak Z1015is. If you want a smaller camera, the Kodak Z1085is (or Z1285is), the Nikon L20, L19 and L18 and the Canon A480 are fairly easy to learn and operate.

The digital cameras that make for the easiest transition from film cameras are those that have viewfinders. Which will take you to the land of Canon. See the Canon A590, A1000, A1100, E1, SD1100, SD1200, SD780, SD890. The A-series and E1 are all compacts with AA batteries. The SD-series are smaller ultracompacts with dedicated ion rechargeable batteries. All work well.
