After two days and about 100 shots I've fallen for the AF-ON button. It's seems natural to me and just works.
So the question is. Am I just strange or is the AF-ON button something other users use if their camera is fitted with one?

absolutely...my shutter release button only fires the shutter, (no half press), AF-ON is my AF button. that, and that alone. i love it. and especially using the "trap AF" technique.

there are 4 bttons on the d300 that imo make it a superb body. the 2 programmable buttons on the front, AFON and AEL. their location and size is absolutely perfect.

AFON/AEL I both use, but use AEL much more often admittedly.

You took two days to decide you love AF-On. Slow learner.;)

I infer congrats on a new camera are in order then.

Must be something in the air a friend on another forum was raving in general how he liked this option. So I decided to give it a whirl if nothing else I'll learn not to fiddle looking for the button any longer. I'll let you know what I think. And what are you doing with that rubbish cmera?

Yep. I use it all the time now - de-couples the shutter release from the focusing. And using CF-Servo means total freedom with no button changes.

CF-Servo + AF-ON = CF-Servo effective
CF-Servo + AF-ON fouce then release = same as SF-Sevro
CF-Servo no AF-ON = manual focus

- it takes maybe an hour to get used to it - but now it's second nature!
