I'm gonna buy one since the video feature has sound.
I will sell the 30D, get a 1D Mark II, and then get this T1i.

BTW, what's with the name?
Wasn't there a film rebel Ti?

Plus it is 500D outside of the US which is an existing Canon product.

I was really stokes when the rumors were saying they would add a jog wheel, but that didn't happen. Guess I'll decide between this thing or a 40D.

The video feature is what draws me in.
I'm gonna need a grip, because the 70-200 f/2.8 is hard to handle on the 30D with my man hands.

My wife and I have no video of us, that will change.
My sister is having a baby next month, hopefully it will be avail by then.

That's a wise and admirable perspective.
Save for the necessary video feature, I'm all about getting true emotion out of my images; lighting is the key to that.

dammit...is this real!!!!

EDIT: After the initial shock and awe....I'm kinda back to my senses....
HD video in an entry camera....wow!!!! that's a temptation...but its not compatible with my 400D accessories and uses SD...URGH!!!! there goes my next camera plans into disarray....

EDIT*2: I wonder if this is more of a D90 competition than a 450D replacement....so where does that put the 50D???

EDIT*3: just noticed...ISO 6400!!!!! :D
Any info on the sensor..is it the same as the 50D???

I really did laugh out loud.

Elisha, yeah as far as I can tell it is just like the XSi shape. That is reason I may still get a 40D.

Plus this is now the most expensive Canon sells, besides the 5D Mk II and the 1Ds. Once you buy the SD (eww anyway) and hard drives to hold 15MP and HD video, you are spending big bucks. Not to mention a monitor or TV to display 1080p and a powerful enough computer to edit it. And a copy of Motion.

Edit: but I want that screen and the higher ISO. Yum.

The XSi takes good pics and I'm sure this new model would as well. The only things that really bugs me is the size. The 40/50D are the perfect size. If my pinky does not fit on the grip, it's an instant fail for me.
I'm pretty sure Canon's target market for the XXXD is for women and hobbits.

I had the same reaction as faisal... At first I was super excited, but once that wore off, I'm less impressed.

Don't get me wrong, it looks like a great camera. And if I was looking for my first slr, then it would be top of the list. But as an upgrade, its not so compelling. I'd have to replace my batteries and flash cards, to get more megapixels (don't need) and movie mode (also don't need). The improvements are higher ISO (which still looks a bit iffy compared to the Nikon's) and the new screen (definitely nice).

So I will stay with my current upgrade plan. Keep the XTi and await the 50D replacement... which I am hoping will be super-compelling!

Hey!!! I'm not a woman, so you are calling me a hobbit??? Not nice :)

I'm a normal sized guy, and I have no problem with the size of the XTi.... Maybe it is just the way I hold it (I carry a camera mostly in my left hand by the lens).

I have shot with some 30D and 40D cameras, and I just find them different.. not better.

The size of the xxD line is one thing that I'm not looking forward to...

No boner here.

The only thing that would get me excited would be a "3D" - FF, 16mp, D700 type AF, 5fps, 5D size. And it ain't gonna happen. :(

I don't aticipate a body change on my part for quite a while.

But the T1i looks like a great small dSLR and the video looks sweet. Wish I had this to start with instead of my old XT. ;)

Wait, what?

Kinda a joke, kinda not. I have a 320GB HDD on my macbook, and it is almost full. My Time Machine backups only go about a month back because my backup drive is just 500GB. With 14bit 15MP RAW files and 1080p video, you need a LOT of storage space. I downloaded a 5D Mk II sample video at full res, it was less than 5mins long, and was almost 1.5GB. The 500D video will be slightly smaller because of 20fps (WTF on that, why not just do everything at 24 fps like it should be), but not small enough that I won't be spending mondo bucks on SD cards and hard drives. It only takes a few purchases until I am spending more on a 500D than I would on a 50D.

Edit: I know it is 20FPS because of processing power, but why is the 5D Mk II 30fps and not 24.

faisal
03-25-2009, 12:27 PM
After the initial awe factor....this is what I like about this camera
Better ISO, nice screen, video...but that SD card really puts me off...plus can't use my batteries....

For me Video is great cause I'm also totally into videography (if such a word exists). Only problem is that I'll need to update my computer to handle the additional processing...

But my main curiosity is how this machine compares to a 50D in image quality....

i think it is more so the speed of the current SDHC cards compared to the CF cards.
Class 6: minimum sustained DTS of 6MB/sec
compared to lets say a 150x CF card which can do ~20MB/sec

Agreed. Media card is never an issue for me as well. My first digicam used SmartMedia. My second one used xD cards. My 3rd, 4th, 5th, & 6th uses SD :D

The only thing that appeals to me with the new camera is the higher ISO, that's all. If I was going to ever upgrade my body, it will be with a xxD series.

I was sad when i had to leave SD behind when i upgraded from the S3 to 40D. I hate having to angle the memory card just right to get it to go into my camera.

Memory these days are so cheap- at least in the USA, that memory really shouldn't be much of a detractor- except for speed. And with 15mb images, you're gonna need some speed.

i agree corey. you hit the nail n the head...if you;re JUST buying a new dslr then the 500d is the goods. but for an "upgrader" i dot see much point.

i read a few posts over at moronville and i always get amused at the criticism of new canon cameras from canon people. the xsi copped it, the MkII copped it, the 40d and now the 500d. all of it completely and utterly ridiculous.

downtrodden
03-25-2009, 02:28 PM
Yeah Rooz, but I still hold to my complete and utter disdain for including video as a feature rather than seriously upgrading camera performance.

I know it's inevitable that one day I will buy a cam with video- hell I almost bought a 5D MkII while on holiday- but then that would have made my 17-55 purchase rather foolish :D

Elisha
03-25-2009, 02:30 PM

some places are claiming that it's got the same sensor as the 50D just cause it has 15mps...

I agree it's a great entry level camera...but it's a nice upgrade from a 400D especially for people who have small hands like me...I just think the 20/30/40/50D cameras are huge....

Elisha
03-25-2009, 02:52 PM
i'm sure it has the same sensor if not a slightly tweaked or butchered version of the same sensor. does not make sense in an engineering perspective to create a whole new one for an entry level body.

Its a great little camera. No second thoughts about that. But, canon didn't release this as a logical upgrade model for the scores of current 350D/400D/450D owners already out there. They've made this for the guy who's looking to get his first DSLR. This is to lure the 'new' guys into the Canon camp. Currently this sits in #2 position (after the 1000D) in canon's camera lineup and has an MSPR of $799. Exactly two yrs back when i bought my 400D, it was also placed in the #2 position (after the 350D) in canons body lineup then and also had a similar MSRP of $799. Now, just see for yourself how much more camera you are getting for the same money in 2yrs time:)

As for the current rebel owners, they have the XXD series as the next logical upgrade path. Having already spent some real time with these cameras this group of current Rebel owners are better aware of the 'real' pro features like better AF System, faster fps, larger & brighter viewfinders, better handling & ergonomics, twin scroll wheels, top lcd, Kelvin WB, ISO in 1/3 stop, PC Port, etc..

Given a choice to upgrade to either the latest 500D or the 3yr old 30D, I would gladly pick up the latter:)

A little late to the party on this one, but the T1i looks like a nice little package. Someone else commented on how much you get these days in an entry level camera and it's true. I am really wondering if there is a significant difference in quality between the two, since I JUST moved up to the 40D a month ago. I had been shooting w/ an XTi for the past two years...

Looks like the new 500D has a Digic IV processor. What does this mean?
Obviously, there are more megapixels than the 40D, but that wasn't convincing enough to get me to buy the new 50D, either. The side-to-side comparisons I had seen showed that the 40D outdid the 50D in lowlight situations, in terms of noise.
