Okay so NikonRumors i wouldnt really call a source of much truth or reliability but they claim Nikon Germany over the weekend had a new entry for a D400 (15mp, 6fps, HD Video, etc) after which the whole site was down and then it was gone, or so they claim.
What i did find more substantial is that the D40/D300 microsites are now gone from the Nikon Germany website - http://www.nikon.de/home/de_DE/homepage/broad/site.html , as the site points out, last time Nikon did this was the D80 the D90 came shortly later.
On a side note reading the site i did discover that Nikon France is offering 1000 Euros cashback to those who feel like buying a D3x+24-70+CX2 :p Now could be the time to buy one! ;)
I don't think that the D400 release in mid 2009 is any great secret and you would not have to be a brain surgeon to guess that it would have HD video.
So having said all that what new?

Could be interesting fosho. I'm just wanting to know the sensor... a all knew one? The D3X sensor? What shall we see.

That D300 is such a good camera, unless that D400 has significantly improved the sensor, I'm not sure how many people will bite.

Wouldn't this be the D700x?

Doh. Dumbass moment. Can't get used to this Nikon having FX sensors thing going around.
Would practically have to be a new sensor.
yeah its all fairly predictable at the moment. the new 500d proves that. more MP's and add video. personally, i'm surprised canon didnt jump on the articulating lcd first. whoever does that is gonna really be lightyears ahead.
Canon have announced (to the trade at least) a general price increase in Australia as of 1 April. It is expected that Nikon will take the opportunity to increase their camera body prices at the same time as so far they have only increased lens prices.

Nikon Australia's pricing has gone up enough as is. I sure hope they dont add any more price increases!
As for D400, sure its to be expected, but the timing in 2009 is the part yet to be revealed. Some suspected the last 2 trade shows would bring it, but it didn't. Granted, even in my curiosity over the D400, i don't look forward to my D300 becoming 'obsoleted' :p

the d700 just went up at ECS to $3700, is that from the xhange rate only ?

That's scary. Obviously ECS's stock supply of cheaper pre price hike Nikor gear is running out.
I think there is a little bit of price gouging going on. As it was explained to me Nikon Australia have only increased lens prices and have held the line on bodies so as not to get to far ahead of Canon but with the Canon rise Nikon bodies will also increase in line with whatever Canon does.
I don't care any more. I've spent enough lately, well maybe a 70-200 f2.8 or a 300 f2.8 or a .... :D :D
Screw bodies, I want lenses :D.

The D700 is about $3200 in Canada; Canada and Australia have roughly the same exchange rate I think. I saw a large pile of "neglected" D700s in their boxes behind the sales counter the other day, guess they aren't moving that well here. But a Russian did buy one right in front me.

There was a price jump of over $1000 on D700 bodies in Aus :(

I'm sure that's wrong. I don't recall the D700 body ever being in the high $2000 dollar range. I thought that it was around $3400. Rooz will provide the definitive answer I guess.
3285 was the cheapest it ever got in Oz.

And now their up over 4000. :( Kicking self.

Where are you getting your pricing from?
The D700 body is listed today at $3649.00 AUSTRALIAN DOLLARS including GST on DCW's web site. That means the price has risen less than $400 since the lowest it every appeared and it's no where near $4000 nor has it had a $1000 price rise.

I got one price of the 3200 (and almost bought on the spot) then been to a couple of shop's since and it was over 4g. In NZ they have done a huge spike with the exchange rate and all.
So you are talking NZ$ then.
You signature confuses the issue because you give NZ as a location but you indicate in your sig that you are in Australia.
3200NZD ? thats the cheapest i've ever seen anywhere. they would have been selling it at or below cost.

and the China press conference is 16 April because 14/4 is an inauspicious day or something in China.
I don't see the brochures story being overly relevant as they ability to download is still available on the web site shot that Nikon Rumours published. What has intrigued me to day is the new technology released in the upcoming D4.1.

Considering im posting a fair bit of this speculative 'news' recently i shall continue...
Rumoured D60 replacement (with Flip Out screen and other guesses of HD Video, 12-15mp capabilities) as taken at a supposedly Eastern European "Nikon Promo shoot"...

Some mainstream tech/camera news sites are carrying this bit of news ^^...
Obviously D400 rumours still continue too as well as the 14th April date gets closer.
if this is true its a major coup for nikon. i honestly thought canon would be doing the articulating lcd first.

My random prediction is that it will be the D65/D5000 or whatever the D60's replacement will be called. 12 MP, maybe crippled video, and Tilt/swivel LCD.
Also possible:
D400
85/1.4G
Personally, I'd be more excited about a better UWA zoom for DX than the okay but expensive 12-24 (e.g., the 10-24 that was speculated), but people are saying that the original 10-24 rumour was a fake.
Other than that, I don't expect anything interesting from Canikon this year. All the excitement seems to be coming from Olympus and Panasonic and the new m4/3 stuff. I've been waiting for a dSLR-quality compact camera for a long time now... I just may finally get my wish!

i see it as "intro level" rather than crippled. i like the direction canon took with this. if you want the best quality video, get a better dslr. i think its smart to do that.
