I have a problem with my Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TZ1 and have been unable to solve the issue, I hope someone can help as the camera is just out of warranty.

This just started after being asked to enter current date and time, and it will not hold these updated settings once turned off. It appears to not be able to remember settings anymore, just like when a CMOS battery goes flat in a PC.
After resetting date and display settings, the camera seems to function as if it is taking a photo, clicks & flash, LCD works fine displaying old photos on the SD card and built in memory, although the picture does not appear on the screen after taking a new shot, just a black screen with camera display settings, all camera setting details appear on black LCD display and you can still enter into the menu and setup functions OK. So the LCD display is fine.

This is where it gets strange........
Once the camera is on, the focus assist red light is permanently on, although dull, as if it is telling me that there is an error or fault within the camera. This light usually only comes on to assist focus and red eye reduction, and still functions in its bright state whilst taking a photo, then returns to its dull "on" position.

My diagnosis and guess at this stage........
Taking the camera apart I discovered that the DMC-TZ1 has a small mangonese lithium button battery (ML421) built into the casing (similar to a CMOS batterey) and I am suspecting this may have become faulty, as the camera cannot retain memory settings such as date and time. I can get to this to replace but am yet to find a local supplier in Australia.

IS IT WORTH TRYING TO REPLACE THIS SMALL BATTERY OR WOULD I BE WASTING MY TIME?
Has anybody seen this problem before and what's the diagnosis?
