View Full Version : Should I return my new Nikkor Micro 105mm VR?

HI everyone!

I bought at AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED from B&H a few weeks ago and I think it might be defective.

Whenever I press down for it to focus the lens starts turning and adjusting but a loud "motor like" sound and clicking noise starts. This happens about 50% of the time. When I took the lens off and put it back on (to make sure it was on the body correctly - which it was) I still had the noise happen. It wasn't as loud but there were even some times when it would go to infinity and then just seem to be stuck there and start clicking.

I rented this type model lens twice from Lens Rentals before I bought my own at B&H. The focusing did take a little getting used to but I don't recall any motor or clicking noises or being stuck at infinity.

Am I loosing my mind or should I just do an exchange with B&H before it's too late?

Thanks for the advice! :)

ETA - I've been playing with a few lenses, including the 105, and they ALL take much longer and are a little louder/clicking when I am focusing on something in the D90's Live View. The 105 lens, compared to ANY of the others is significantly louder.

Any chance it's the body & not the lens? When I'm not in LV they all focus super fast & super quiet. Sorry to be a pest - I'm just not sure if it's the lens or maybe just an effect of the mechanisms with the D90 Live View? Make sense?

Sounds like a no-brainer to me... if a brand new lens is making that much noise you should return it immediately - that said B&H's return policy is 15 days, and it seems from your post that you have passed that already - give them a call and see if they will work with you on this - you may have to send it to Nikon for a warranty repair at this point.

Return policy, and their customer service number can be found here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/find/HelpCenter/ReturnExchange.jsp

Thanks Britkev! I spoke to B&H and they told me they'd do an exchange and pay for the S&H back.

Good to hear that they took care of you - I had a feeling they probably would even if my initial response did seem a little more pessimistic.

Just wanted to say thanks again guys! I brought the lens and camera body to B&H and they spent about 30 min checking things out. Once all was said and done they all agreed it was a defective lens and I walked out with a new one 10 min later. Couldn't have been easier!

Of course I also walked out with a new $150 camera bag that I might not have bought if I sent this back via UPS ... but I guess it's not a bad thing to outgrow your old bag!

I have purchased about 95% of my stuff at B&H. I have only had to return one thing and it was a non-issue. In today's internet-based retail, that kind of service can't be underestimated. I'm glad to hear how well you were treated.
