do you have to use sony lenses or if not how to tell if they will fit

The Sony Alpha mount is derived from the Minolta AF mount and is I believe fully compatible with Minolta AF lenses. Third party manufacturers such as Sigma also make (some of) their lenses in Alpha mount.
