Hi
The new Cannon 501 Records up to 30 seconds of VGA video with sound (at a sluggish 10 fps) !!!!!!!!!
Come on guys at cannon you could have done better atleast
How about a Resolution of 640 X 380 recordable at lets say 30 fps for atleast a couple of mins . I think thats a decent combo for an economical section
I wouldnt have minded if they had given me combo for some more dollars.

I suspect that they're trying to keep the video down to managable sizes - for email. I wish they'd just shove an mpeg4 codex in, instead.

I think you meant the A510.

I wouldn't think that Canon would put their best processor into a sub $200 camera. Instead it seems like they put the money into the still-camera functions. It will be intersting to compare it to the A75 in a week or so.

If you want 30fps buy the SD200.

MPEG4 Codec's, (Coder Decoder) like DivX and XviD modules, take up considerably more program memory space than the AVI module, and require a pretty fast processor to achieve a reasonable compression time. That is why AVI is a defacto standard, on most digital cameras. It gets the job done, but is not very flash-card memory efficient. But I would bet that someone is working on smaller MPEG4 modules for digital cameras, and a faster cheaper processor. ;)

The A series cameras are a pre-Digic processor designed for low cost applications. The fact that it can do 640 x 480 at all is pretty surprising.

Looking at what this camera does have, and having used the A75 quite a bit, I think it is easily the best camera in this price range.
